Minor Upgrade of SmarterMail

This article applies to recent versions of SmarterMail. View articles for SmarterMail 15.x and earlier.
The steps for upgrading to the latest release of SmarterMail from an older version of the application vary depending on which version you are upgrading from. These instructions are for upgrading from a previous minor version release, like upgrading from Build 6911 to Build 6928, or from 16.0 to 16.1.

For instructions on how to perform a major version upgrade, such as upgrading from 16.x to the Current Build (which is referenced on the Downloads page of the website as Build XXXX (Release Date)), or moving from 13.x to 16.x, please refer to the knowledge base article -- Major Upgrade of SmarterMail.
- Due to significant backend changes, it is not possible to roll back to an older version after installing the Current Build or version 7.x.
- All configuration data and emails are preserved when upgrading from a previous major release. - Before following the instructions in this article, make sure the appropriate Microsoft .NET Framework is installed for the version to which you will be upgrading, based on the version's System Requirements. - Due to file structure changes that are in SmarterMail 7.x, upgrading from an earlier version to version 7.x or higher can take up to several hours, based on the amount of data.
Follow these steps to perform a minor version update:
  1. Back up your SmarterMail installation and data.
  2. If you are running SmarterMail as an IIS site, stop the SmarterMail site. Stop the associated application pool as well.
  3. Uninstall SmarterMail from the Add or Remove Programs control panel. All configuration data and email will be preserved after uninstalling the program file.
  4. Download the most recent automated installer for the version of the product you want to install. You can get this from within the Licenses area of your Account, or you can contact sales@smartertools.com and we can send you a link.
  5. Run the SmarterMail installer.
  6. During the installation process, you will be prompted for the installation path. In order to keep existing data and settings, install to the same path used in previous installs. For reference, the default installation location is C:\Program Files (x86)\SmarterTools\SmarterMail.
  7. If you are running SmarterMail as an IIS site, restart IIS.

where can I find information on upgrade from 11x to 12.x

The upgrade from 11.x to 12.x is a "Major Upgrade" so you'll want to review the KB we created for major upgrades for instructions.

I think it is best to stop IIS prior to uninstalling. Shouldn't the order of the first four steps list above be: 1) Backup 2) Download 3) Stop IIS 4) Uninstall? Please confirm. Thanks

Hi John. Though I recommend following the instructions as they listed, the steps COULD be ordered in a few different ways without causing an error. Two things you do need to keep in order: backup your data before you uninstall SmarterMail & stop IIS before you install the new version.

The upgrade process is so bad its not even funny, every time i do an upgrade there are major issues and i end up bringing my mail server down for hours, I wish SmartTools would address this issue and make it a one click upgrade process that takes into consideration IIS installations.
Rob Wellard (10/2/2015 at 1:02 AM)
You can just run the new install and it will upgrade. It should take only a minute or two. You can uninstall and reinstall and we leave all your configuration files alone. The only issues are when IIS decides to hold a lock onto a file. Be sure to stop IIS. If you have any questions or continue to have issues, please contact support.

DO NOT UNINSTALL THE PREVIOUS VERSION before installing the latest version.

If you do this, you have to re-sync all of your folders, which, if you use Outlook, involves deleting all of your mail and re-downloading it from the server.

I didn't uninstall SmarterMail the previous time I performed an upgrade and this didn't happen so I presume this is the reason. This time I thought I should follow the recommended procedure but it was clearly a mistake.

If someone from SmarterMail could confirm or deny that this is the cause, it would help others avoid this incredibly irritating and inconvenient situation.

We would also like to hear a reply to this. We have large clients using active sync and this would be a major problem if they had to re-sync all their folders!
Paul Marchese (11/4/2015 at 1:26 PM)
The reason for the re-sync is unrelated to uninstalling the previous version. There was a fix to in the latest version (14.4) to bring our IMAP implementation into compliance with the RFC related to folder UID validity values (UIDVV). At server start up when users are loaded, any folder with a UIDVV of zero _HAD_ to be incremented to one. Without this change IMAP would not work properly in Outlook 2016. Whenever the UIDVV is incremented, it signifies to the mail client that the folder needs to be re-synced. This is a one time re-sync that will affect all customers using IMAP. I hope this explains the behavior you are seeing.

Robert, I run SmarterMail under IIS on a Windows 2011 Essentials server and just upgraded from SmarterMail 13.5 to 14.4 today following the directions. I had not seen this post, as I was on the major upgrade page following the instructions there (take IIS down, uninstalled 13.5, installed 14.4, turned IIS back on). The only snag I ran into was that I could not access the webmail until I enabled and turned on the internal SmarterMail web server (on port 9998). After doing that I was able to log in normally via the web server (port 443) and enter branding and update license and all appears working. Does what you say above mean that I have to do anything special on either the server side or the client side as a result of the IMAP fix? I thought I read somewhere that it's automatically done by the server.

I didn't uninstall SmarterMail and I performed an upgrade to all my Smartermail Servers, All updated properly but in one server i faced issue of deleting all of mail and re-downloading it from the server.
Kindly provide me resolution and root cause for future REF

Ritesh Kakkad (2/6/2016 at 8:49 AM)
Hi Ritesh. SmarterMail 14.4.5784 required a clean-up of UID validity values used when syncing with IMAP. This may be what caused the emails to re-download. To really look into the issue and find a definitive cause, I would recommend getting in touch with our support team via a support ticket.

I have never deleted my current version to perform a minor upgrade. Does this is any way impact my installation's Configuration settings or user account settings?
Wolf Tombe (3/6/2016 at 8:19 AM)
While recommended, uninstalling SmarterMail prior to a minor upgrade is not absolutely necessary. Your configuration settings and user accounts should not be impacted since those are stored in folders that are separate from the SmarterMail program on your server.

Andrea, Thank you very much!!
