Import Contacts to SmarterMail

This article applies to recent versions of SmarterMail. View articles for SmarterMail 15.x and earlier.

SmarterMail supports importing contacts from two different types of files: vCards (VCF) and comma-separated text files (CSV). SmarterMail also supports importing from a .zip file containing any combination of these files.

Follow these steps to import contacts:

  1. Go to the Contacts area of your SmarterMail account.
  2. Click the Actions (...) button.
  3. From the dropdown menu, select Import
  4. The Import Contacts modal will load. Here, you can select which source to import your new contacts to. (E.g., My Contacts.) You can also click on the Add Files box to open a desktop window so you can select your file(s) or you can drag your file(s) to the modal.
  5. Once the you've added the file(s), click the Import button.
  6. If any conflicts occur, you will be asked to resolve them by performing one of the actions below:
    • Add Contact - This option adds a completely new contact record with the information in the vCard.
    • Replace - This option replaces the contact in the box with the new one being uploaded. To examine the properties of the close match contacts, however your mouse over the magnifying glass icon in the list at the bottom of the page.
    • Skip - This option skips this contact and omits the uploaded contact information.
  7. Once all conflicts are resolved, the process is complete.

Is there a way to "Add Contact" for all remaining contacts? I'm working with a client who has over 5K contacts, with probably over 1000 that are duplicates in some way. He doesn't want to have to click "Add Contact" 1000 times. There should be an option: "Do this for all remaining contacts".

Appreciate the feedback, Jim. This functionality is not available but I can definitely see the value. I followed up with you via email with more information.

I would love to have this feature. Is there any news about it?

You can also open the file in a text editing program such as Textpad, sort the file with "remove duplicates" checked, and then scroll through the file for anything else obvious.

What is the format of the CSV file? I've tried several formats and none of them work.
Michael Muller (6/14/2017 at 9:12 AM)
Usually if you do an export first (even if there are no contacts) then that'll give you the format of the file needed to import. Haven't tried myself with contacts in particular but that's what we've done for mailing lists in the past.

Hello :)
Is it possible to specify the category when importing contacts? Or would this also be possible via API? Thanks for the feedback. - Steven

Stephan -- you can import contacts and apply it to the "Categories" field. If the category doesn't exist, it's created for the contact on import. However, you may need to enable the category after the import. This is probably possible with the API -- and my guess is, as I haven't tested, that you could actually assign the category to the contact in import via the API.
