SmarterMail Verbiage Really Messed Me Up
Problem reported by Ron Raley - 8/12/2020 at 12:37 AM

SmarterTools, please hear this one out and your feedback would be appreciated.

Administrator > User Defaults
"User defaults are applied to new domains only. To push these settings to existing domains so they can be applied to users within, use Propagation."

So I changed Mailbox Size Limit MB from 200 to 1000.  Everybody deserves a gig mailbox nowadays, right?  In reading the above note, I assume my change applies to new domains only.  Okay, so I need to propagate the DEFAULT (not ACTUAL) mailbox size to all domains.

This action set all 15,000 mailboxes on our server to ACTUAL 1000 MB Limit!

The phone started ringing.  I immediately used the propagation tool again to set all mailboxes to unlimited. Finally, 36 hours later I was able to robocopy and restored all settings.json files for our users from a backup. Restarted SmarterMail.  All was good again.

I find the verbiage a bit misleading.  Otherwise, the propagation action may not be correct.  Maybe I'm just confused.  As always, thanks for listening.

Ron

The DEFAULT applies if you create a new domain from now to further...

PROPAGATION takes that DEFAULTS and applies those to ALL EXISTING  domain and users, ALL of them, nothing excluded.

I think that the explanation is correct.

Maybe you don't understand it well.

Yeah... it did exactly what it said it would do, I dont see any confusion here.

Interesting.  I thought I was changing just "User Defaults".

Every domain has User Defaults and all of ours are set at 200 MB limit.

I see no function to change this value across all domains.

I will flesh that out a bit more to make it more obvious that changing user defaults will only apply to new domains that are created on the server from that moment on, and that in order to get those changes/settings to all existing domains you have to propagate them. No harm in making it a bit more understood.

I couldn't find that exact text in our help docs, but I did go through and try and make it a bit more apparent what User/Domain Defaults were and how Propagation works.

Derek,

Here is a screenshot of the exact setting that I thought I was propagating in the original scenario.

To change this setting for each domain, I assume it is going to be a manual process.

Thanks for the feedback!

Derek,

Bumping the thread here.  Do you see where I got caught up?  So in my above example, we actually have some domains set at 10 MB.

Is there a way to propagate this to all domains?

Thanks for your hard work,
Ron

"Added: An option to propagate system-level User Default settings to a domain's User Default templates, to existing users, or both."

We are not running the latest SmarterMail version yet, but I just read this. This added feature is directly related to my server mishap / misunderstanding. I wanted to propagate only defaults.

Great Job SmarterTools! Thank you for listening.

Ron
