Upgraded from the last build to this on Debian 13. Upgrade went smoothly and no apparent problems after initial testing - this is a vanilla deployment, IMAP/SMTP/POP/Webmail, no EWS/MAPI.

Guess it is going that good or others are not willing to update just yet!

We updated a test server and everything seems to be working fine. Will install on gateways and a production server in the next few days.

No problems here so far on Ubuntu Server 26.04.1. We have a small environment with a mixture of MAPI (mostly), Webmail, IMAP/SMTP, and EAS.

We have no reports of this, and I looked to see if you have a ticket, and you do not.  If you want us to look into it, please open a support incident.  Please include the OS and how your environment is architected on your support ticket. For example, include and remove drives and how they are attached, etc.

@Terry - That is why I don't want to update yet. Last time I updated the same thing happened to our main server. Spool didn't start up and after restarting the smartermail on our Linux server, the spool finally started up. Not sure you are using Linux.

Glad to see we were not the only ones... but Not glad to see this is an issue!

@Tim - you replied back to me saying on 9/23/2026 at 5:06PM "That is strange. Much of what you're talking about..." When I was saying that upon installing the spool as showing issues till I restarted the Smarter Mail service.

Michael,

I forgot about your post.  Appreciate you reminding me.  I asked my team today after reading Terry's posts if we had any tickets, and they said we don't. Let’s open tickets; we would really like to see a server that can replicate the issue.

The only way to get the spool to restart was to restart the server?

@Tim Uzzanti I didn't feel it warranted a support ticket, I now check the services after an upgrade and just mentioned it as an observation. As mentioned, it's only after updating a version, the services start fine after a full reboot.

I've just tried an upgrade from a vm backup and whilst it still failed to start, I happen to leave it for a few more minutes and it did eventually start. So it seems to just be a lot slower at starting the service rather than the other. So maybe it's more a 'me' problem as I expected it to be up and running with the rest. Maybe it's relying on a dependency so is the last to start. But it did start.

@terry fairbrother I think Tim's bigger concern is that the Spool service should start automatically on upgrade/installation/general startup and it not starting may hint at a deeper issue in the environment as well. We may be able to replicate the behavior by mirroring as similar an environment as possible and having you provide config-only backups of the system level configurations.

If we can track this down in your environment it may net better overall results for others :)

let me see how it goes on the next upgrade, I will time how long it takes for the service to start and then either report it here or by a ticket

@Tim Uzzanti I can confirm the service does start, it just takes a few minutes after the upgrade.

@terry fairbrother  How many domains and users do you have on that server?  Wonder if we’re still loading up mailboxes and we’re waiting to deliver.

We have an employee with a small server seeing something similar.  The Mail Team is going to look into it.

@terry fairbrother  Hello, could you tell us where you're seeing the start up delay (the spool service in the services tab, logs, etc)?  We do have a spool startup delay when the SmarterMail service initially starts.  This is to give an opportunity for other third party applications such as antivirus or antispam programs, to start before email processing begins.  If you restart the service and navigate to the services tab the spool can stay in the "stopped" state until the initial startup time but if you refresh afterwards it will show as "running".  If this is the same delay you're noticing then we can make it more clear that it is merely starting up still, rather than being fully stopped.

It does sound like the delay you are describing. My method is

take the update into command line and allow the upgrade to take place. I do not stop any services, just allow the installer to handle all of that

Once the upgrade has taken place, go into troubleshooting and check the services are running. it will show 10/11

check the services, spool is the one that is stopped so I have been manually starting it. However at the weekends upgrade, I left it. it seemed to be 1 ~ 2 minutes of webpage refreshing before it showed as having started (maybe less, I wasn't timing it)

I guess the administrator in me always gets nervous when a services that are expected to start with the rest suddenly shows as stopped. Years of a flaky exchanges not starting any services after upgrades has taught me to never assume that things are fine and to check afterwards!! So perhaps showing the 'stopped' could be changed to 'delayed start' or starting. Now that i'm aware of what it's doing I feel more reassured that it was a terry issue and not smartermail :)

and thank you all for taking the time to look into this

It is nice to know there is no bug and it will always start, but we are going to make it look a little cleaner for our release this week.

Not sure we have seen that before. Please try re-activating your license. If that doesn't work, please open a ticket with support.

Hi, Would be nice if we could blacklist the ip addresses of these users that try and het access via the email (no longer exists)
Brian Replied
The offending IP adresses should be blocked automatically... that would be a nice feature.
