Windows to Linux - Dry run / license implications?
Question asked by Nathan - 8/15/2024 at 7:19 AM
Answered
If we attempt a run through of a Windows to Linux conversion what are the implications from a license perspective? Can we temporarily dual run the same license on both to get through the upgrade, or can we at least get through the file conversion process without having to move the license?

Parking the licensing side, I presume there is nothing stopping us copying the 'domains' folder over cross numerous times to a test box without impact the production server so we are confident the conversion works?

You should be able to run them side by side for a bit. Hit up support they should be able to give you a trial license that accommodates your license so you have no issues at all. That also opens a channel of communication so you can let us know of any issues or if it worked out well for you.

The only thing to watch out for is when testing with data from a live server is sometimes people might have calendar notifcations or other types of custom filters or forwarding in place that can sometimes cause your test server to attempt an outbound delivery. Disabling the spool, turning off outbound SMTP, or blocking access on the machine/network level would work too.

Hello Nathan,

Yo can run your license on two (2) boxes up to thirty (30) days without issues for migration and testing purposes. When done you can revert the test box back to the free version ( https://portal.smartertools.com/kb/a2745/revert-a-licensed-version-of-smartermail-to-the-free-edition.aspx ).

There should be no issues with coping your Domains folder over again and a gain as needed.

Thank you

But that's not the case, I've migrated from Windows to Linux, and when I reactivate the license on Linux, it says that the activation limit is exceeded and the count needs to be reset; If you don't activate it, all services won't start.

Eventually, I had to re-lease a new license on the official website to activate it, and this is because I was in the rental model and not in the buyout mode?

Contact support they should be able to add more activations to your key for testing.

We primarily handle testing and transitions with Trial Keys, not by increasing activations on existing keys. Please reach out to support for a Trial Key, and we will send it over. We have a ton of customers testing and transitioning to Linux after many years (some 10+) of running on Windows!

Because server failures can happen at any time, for example, on non-working days, our server fails, and we need to enable the standby server, similar to the migration operation, but at this time, the standby server cannot reactivate the license, and contacting your technical support may not be able to get a response in time, and the standby server cannot be put into work as soon as possible.

@Jerry, please take a look at this help doc regarding the activation limit. This is something you can do yourself.

My license is in Lease mode, and I didn't find the reset button you said, but I have contacted your technical support and have helped increase the number of license activations, thank you.
