Failover - Licensing

Could we get a definitive answer on this...

When setting up a Primary and Hot Standby server configuration, do we require multiple Enterprise licenses or is a single Enterprise license good for both the Primary and Hot Standby systems?

Hello Rod,

Failover functionality is included with an Enterprise license. You'll only need one Enterprise license, as the supported configuration of Failover allows only one mail server to be activated at a time. Your primary server will be activated with your Enterprise license key, and in the event of downtime, your standby server should then be activated. In the Failover documentation, there's a sample of a PowerShell script that can be created to automate the SmarterMail failover process (stopping primary and starting standby / stopping standby and starting primary).

I hope this helps!

Thanks Andrea, I thought that was what I was reading but wanted to be certain.

To test the failover setup, can I use free Smartermail license?

@Ashish - SmarterMail failover setups require Enterprise license keys, and so you will not be able to test under a free installation. That said, you can install your existing key in your test environment for no more than 30 days, and this should allow you to test sufficiently. If needed you can reach out to our sales/customer service team for a trial as well. I hope this helps!

Hello Paul,

No, a failover setup is basically three servers, The Primary Mail server, the Failover mail server and the file/storage server that house all the data that the other two servers pull from.

Thank you
