Move Email Folder List
Question asked by JerseyConnect Team - 4/2/2019 at 10:46 AM
Unanswered
We recently upgraded to build 7016 and It has been brought to our attention that the move email functionality lists folder in a very confusing manner. Taking a look myself it looks like this is broken down into three sections that are each sorted alphabetically: first default folders, then any top level custom folders, and finally all sub-folders with their full path.

SmarterTools support has confirmed that this is the intended behavior, but for users with several folders and sub-folders it's unintuitive and difficult to work with. Has anyone else received similar complaints? I propose this list should be sorted alphabetically for all folders together and not done in sections.

The way SM lists folders for us (build 7024) is correct and how it should be.

System folders Inbox, Deleted Items, Drafts, Junk Email, Sent Items) are in their own section. Then custom folders are below the system folders.

I have my person account that has folders within folders and SM displays it without issues. See the screenshot of an example...

Sorry if I wasn't clear, the folder list on the left nav is fine. The issue is seen when trying to move a message from the action menu.

Hi JerseyConnect,

We're aware of this issue and plan to get it fixed. Though I'm afraid I don't have an ETA at the moment. I also don't know if there's been a decision on how that list SHOULD be sorted. Personally, I would prefer that it mimic the Email section, showing:

  • Inbox
  • Deleted Items
  • Drafts
  • Junk Email
  • Sent Items
  • [Custom person folders in alphabetical order]
  • [Folders that have been shared with you in alphabetical order]

I'm curious what others think. Would you prefer that ^ sort order or purely alphabetical?

I agree, the folder list should mimic the same layout as the email section.

Mimicking the email section layout would be good. Just as long as the sub-folders are all listed with their parents and not stuck at the bottom.

This has been discussed else where,

A long list of shared folders is unmanageable, in SM15 they were sorted alphabetically and we had a shared tree structure. With an A-Z suppliers and A-Z customer structure:

Suppliers/ A / ABC Automation / Invoices     (Each supplier has 4 folders)

This worked really well  however now all you get a long list of shared folders so if you want to find or file something for example RS components. you have scroll past hundreds of folders to get there.

i suppose we are not really supposed to actually use the Sharing feature we have paid extra for!!!!!

We only changed how we display nested folders from a share, that's why it looks different between 15 and 17, this was a deliberate change. But we understand we need to implement this feature and reintroduce shared folder nesting. After seeing the user you have with their use case and some other's have mentioned their use cases here recently. We will be going back to how we displayed multiple shared folders, they will become nested again and with this feature they will be able to share their entire subfolder tree at once.
