Syncing contact categories with iPhone is not possible from Smarter mail. It is also not possible from outlook through iTunes. But it is possible to group contacts in iCloud through "Groups" and it functions just like categories.

 

Proposition:

Can SmarterTools program the sync function of SmarterMail with iPhone to translate/map the Categories into the Groups, just like iCloud does? If so the problem is resolved.

using Groups is also possible if you are syncing iPhone and Outlook through the use of Contact Folders in Outlook. But that's one dimensional. Each contact can only be in one Folder.

 

But iCloud allows you to add the same contact to multiple groups without creating duplicate contact.
