Problem installing SmarterMail 12.5.5409
Problem reported by Robert Voigt - 10/28/2014 at 5:01 AM
Resolved
Dear Smartertools,

There seems to be a problem with the install file for version SmarterMail 12.x (12.5.5409).
I tried this 4 times and at the end i keep getting the attached error.
Also disabled the AV and even restarted the system a couple a times with no result.

So i had to revert back to the old version SmarterMail 12.x (12.4.5364).

I never had this problem before with other updates.
Please advise what to do next.

Regards,

Robert

Sounds like some of the files got corrupted at some point in time. Uninstall, reboot, install new version. Remember to disable the built-in webserver after you reinstall.

Bruce, thanks for the reply. So besides the backup, must i leave all the files in place (program/ mail store - with the settings) and do the uninstall and then overwrite these? Or will they be delete when i do the uninstall?

Odd enough after the error and reboot there is no problem installing the same version. Or is the just normal?

Uninstalling SmarterMail will leave all users, settings, and other data in tact. Whenever you do a major version upgrade, you must uninstall the okd version, reboot, and then install the new version Remember to. DISABLE the built-in SmarterMail webserver after reinstalling - it's designed only to do the initial configuration, and IIS should be configured for SmarterMail web access.

Glad that worked for you, Robert!

for anyone else who might encounter similar issues, here are the official SmarterTools KB articles relating to MINOR and MAJOR version upgrades:

  • MINOR VERSION: Minor Upgrade of SmarterMail - SmarterTools

When doing a MINOR VERSION upgrade, it is always advisable to STOP the IIS and SmarterMail services prior to doing the upgrade.  Remember to RESTART the SmarterMail IIS service after the upgrade complete.

  • MAJOR VERSION: Major Upgrade of SmarterMail - SmarterTools

When doing a MAJOR VERSION upgrade, remember to UNINSTALL the OLD version, REBOOT the server, BACKUP your data files -- both the

    • C:\SmarterMail directory

assuming you used the standard installation paths
IMPORTANT: When you finally get to installing the major version upgrade, make certain you use the SAME PATHS you used in your original version.

Since you indicated the solution I suggested resolved your issue, I have marked this as resolved.
