Microsoft full break with Legacy eMail

I know this is beyond my kin when it comes to contacts, however, Microsoft is in full break mode with Legacy Exchange and Outlook Classic.

Folks need to be planning forward as a race against time is upon us and move to eM Client, Microsoft began blocking EWS by default in October 2026 for 365 (aka online) and will completely shut down EWS in Exchange Online by April 2027. I'm sure Microsoft is likely to make Exchange on-prem history at some point and is certainly not innovating on this platform.

At this time we have learned so much from FireBase, REST and other like API Frameworks -- maybe its time add-on a new way to sync eMail and bring eM Client along. Open the Framework so that a Thunderbird Plug-in would be available.

The future looks bright for Linux but we need a non-Microsoft License for eMail Sync.

We share your concern, and we’re keeping a close eye on the alternatives. The most promising one is JMAP (JSON Meta Application Protocol), an open standard developed by an IETF working group. It’s a modern HTTP-based protocol with JSON payloads, and it doesn’t depend on any single vendor.

The core protocol and email sync have been published as IETF standards, and we’re starting to see them implemented by various email systems. The standard for syncing contacts has also been completed, and standards for syncing calendars and tasks are being worked on. There’s a published framework for sharing, with an extension for shared mail folders in progress, and a published extension that lets JMAP run over WebSockets for real-time push updates.

While we aren't quite ready to implement JMAP in SmarterMail, we are keeping an eye on the working group's progress. I'm optimistic that JMAP will be a good fit for taking the place of EWS as Microsoft leaves it behind.

But EWS works for emclient and is a very good alternative to save license money skipping the EAS licenses.

Yes, you don't need a EAS for eM Client but you have the MAPI / EWS License instead. I know it cheaper but ya still need a License.

JMAP is just the ticket I was thinking of and its IETF -- open and free. I'm sure they are on it -- but keep eM Client in the loop.
@Howard Dell

Indeed but we run MAPI for all our clients and I dont have an issue with that. Its a part of the basic price when renewing.

But we pay a lot for EAS and we could save quite some money oin shutting it down.
