While it is kinda an interresting idea, at some point you could also use a monitoring platform, such for example Zabbix. 
It's free and it has already built-in templates for windows/linux host monitoring and you can virtually monitor anything with it either creating your own checks/triggers or using official or existing community templates.

Especially if the SmarterMail service is not the only one in your fleet.
