Cannot reset admin password

I apparently updated the admin password from my password manager (which is wrong now) and I cannot login as admin now. I need to reset the password but 1) the search function on community threads is really frustrating and 2) all the support articles refer to much older versions of SmarterMail. I'm running 8818 at the moment so I assume it's a .json file that needs to be modified but I'm at a loss as to which one as I have checked several. Can anyone advise on how I can reset admin?

AFAIK it's in the administrators.json file


You might want to restore a previous version from the "Archived Data" subfolder dated from before the password has changed.

For this you need to stop SM and replace the file with the archived one, and start SM again.

Thank you to both of you. Yes, something was actually wrong with the administrators.json file and the suggested changes to the hash weren't possible because that wasn't in it. I had a backup of the entire smartermail directories for an upgrade and was able to just replace the json file from there. Was able to log right back in with the original password.  Thanks again for the replies!

Just as an FYI, There should have been a backup of the file in the Archived Data folder as well, This folder should contain a rolling five (5) day backup of all config files in that Directory. This folder (Archived Data) will be present at the user level, domain level and system level and will be in the respective directories.

C:\SmarterMail\Domains\domain_name\Users\user_name
