Reset the Administrator Username and Password

On occasion, you may need to reset the username and password for the system administrator. For example, the system administrator password may need to be reset if the password is unknown due to a previous system administrator changing it without recording the password.

Follow these steps to reset the system administrator login information:

  1. Stop the SmarterStats service
  2. Open Windows Explorer (My Computer).
  3. Navigate to the \MRS\App_Data\Config folder. (The default location is C:\Program Files (x86)\SmarterTools\SmarterStats\ for 64-bit installs -- Remove the (x86) from the default path for 32-bit installs).
  4. Make a copy of the AppConfig.xml file as a backup. (E.g., AppConfig_old.xml.)
  5. Right-click on AppConfig.xml and choose Open With -> and select any text editor you have installed. (E.g., Notepad.)
  6. Delete the following three lines:
    <SmarterStatsAdmin>...</SmarterStatsAdmin>
    <SmarterStatsPassword>...</SmarterStatsPassword> <SmarterStatsPasswordEnc>...</SmarterStatsPasswordEnc>

  7. Save the modified AppConfig.xml file.
  8. Restart the SmarterStats service.

You should now be able to log in to SmarterStats using the defaults: "admin" (no quotes) for the username, password and site ID.
