How do I know or look up what the smtp settings are?
Question asked by Helen McGee - 12/3/2014 at 2:48 PM
Answered
My boss has no idea what the smtp settings are, and he's the one who handles the email set up. I'm trying to check my work email in gmail. I tried smtp.workdomain.com with the rest of the settings as gmail's default, but no luck. The webmail site I log into has a different URL than the company website, but smtp.webmailurl.com doesn't work either, with ssl or tls.

Hello Helen,

Thank you for your inquiry. I'm not certain if you have access to the SmarterMail web interface or if you wanted to pass along he details to the individual that does.  Log into SmarterMail web interface with the System Administrator account.

Click on the Settings | General Settings | Server Info Tab.  You will find the default information about the server.  There are other details that you can obtain by reviewing the user guide of the SmarterMail application.

If you have any questions please consider opening a Support ticket and we can review this further.

Thank You.

My boss looked, and there was no Server Info tab under general settings. (We looked through all of settings, and there was no server info anywhere that we could find.) We checked, and while he's an administrator, he's not the primary admin. That's another account that no one knows the password for.

He's got a Domain Settings option in his settings, which general settings was under. There was no General Settings directly under Settings.

Hello Helen,

Thanks for the update. You may want to consider making the decision to edit / reset the Admin account on the system if you are not aware of the credentials.  Please note the following steps in the Knowledge Base Article.

Thanks.

Hi Helen,

I'm not sure what your setup is, but a possibility is that your boss only has the Domain Administrator login because another company is hosting your email. If this is true, and SmarterMail is not installed on a local server, you'd want to contact that hosting company to pinpoint the SMTP settings. They would have the System Administrator login that's needed to view the server information. If you're not sure, one thing you can do is use MX Toolbox to see who is hosting your email. Simply go to http://mxtoolbox.com/ and enter your domain (example.com) in the Domain Name field. The bolded result is typically the hosting provider.

I hope this helps!
