Which Mac email client works best with SM?
Question asked by YS Tech - 10/31/2023 at 6:29 AM
Answered
I'm getting pretty fed up with all these mail clients as none seem to work for me with my SM accounts.
Apple Mail would be fine if it worked with my SM accounts but it just crashes the instant I add one!
I tried the following:
1) Airmail - my version no longer works with the latest OS
2) BlueMail - spurious issues with email content/sender overlaps
3) Mailspring - issues with wrong content related to email headers
4) Thunderbird - needs Safari
All have issues of some kind.

Has anyone found the perfect email client for Mac and SM?
Thanks

eM Client is a great option! It's available on both Mac and Windows, and it has a uniform design across both, making it easy for users to switch between and for you to support. I'd encourage you to give it a try!

We have hundreds of thousands of people using SmarterMail and Apple Mail including myself on six different accounts EWS / IMAP / DAV.  Half our office is using Apple Mail with one or more of these protocols.

To be clear to all customers, Apple Mail, MacOS and SmarterMail have ZERO issues together.  If anything, it's a near perfect experience.

Anything Anthony refers to is a problem with his MacOS / Apple Mail which we have offered to help with because Apple Mail can be temperamental (unrelated to SmarterMail) and often needs to be repaired by cleaning out the Mailstore folders and/or Spotlight databases. This is similar to deleting an Outlook profile if Outlook decides to corrupt itself etc.

Really don't appreciate people jumping around the community making people believe there is some compatibility issue when it couldn't be further from the truth.

eM Client looks nice, clean interface, etc. I'll give it a go. Unfortunately, it will cost £55 for me to use it fully instead of the other Free software (up to 2 accounts on the free version and non-commercial only).
But if it works well then I'm sure it would be worth it, I've spent more than that in time trying to get one working!!!

Hi YS Tech,

Not to worry... In an upcoming build, we're going to be releasing our new eM Client integration! This new partnership will allow you and your Domain Administrators to receive a free eM Client Business Pro license, which will be valid for up to 3 device activations. You'll also be able to purchase additional device activations at a discounted rate.

For now, try out eM Client with the free version and make sure it'll fit your needs. Then, when we release the public version of our current BETA, you should be able to take advantage of this new partnership and offer for a free license.

I hope this helps!

Hasham, thanks for the reply, i'd used Mac mail for a very long time up until about a year and a half ago. It then just stopped working with my SM accounts. No idea why, neither do Apple or SM. It stopped working on 3 of my desktop machines with varying email accounts. I've reinstalled OS, I've updated OS, updated SM and still the issue persists, hence the question.
One thing i'd like to check against other people's setups is their DNS settings, just in case it's something silly like that. I use one domain for my SSL for all the other domains, so they all use the mail.mysecuredomain.com as the incoming and outgoing mail server. Would you have that as an MX record as well as the main domain as another MX record for non secure, e.g.?

I have DKIM, SPF and DMARC all setup, everything looks good when testing in mxtoolbox. All other email clients don't crash instantly (some have other issues (as described above).
I'm at a loss with Mac Mail, unfortunately.

@Andrea, thanks for the reply. I've installed and setup 2 of my main accounts from my SM setup. Both are working fine with emails.
The calendars, contacts, tasks, notes, etc. for each account aren't syncing though, is that something that's in the works as it's really something i'd need?
I can't see anything in the account settings to sync these apart from to local folders.
Thanks
Anthony

It sounds like your account is only syncing over IMAP. To sync all those sections, you will need to have EWS enabled for the account. Even then, I believe that the trial version of eM Client does not sync notes. If you do not have EWS licensed for your SmarterMail server, you can add a WebDAV account to eM Client to sync contacts, tasks, and calendars.

Hi YS Tech,

It looks like you're not currently licensed for MAPI/EWS. Without this add-on, your syncing options will be limited to IMAP (to sync emails), CardDAV (to sync contacts), and CalDAV (to sync calendar appointments). In most clients, these 3 accounts would need to be created separately. However, due to our special relationship with eM Client, we actually have a neat feature with them which allows you to create an IMAP/WebDAV/XMPP connection through one account. Please see IMAP and WebDAV for eM Client for more details on how to set up this option.

That said, I'd also encourage you to test out MAPI/EWS. This is paid add-on that must be renewed annually with your Maintenance and Support, and it's a preferred syncing method for many customers. It allows your users to connect to various desktop clients with Exchange-level syncing of email, contacts, calendars, tasks and notes. Please see the Client/Protocol Breakdown for more details on what syncing options and features are available. If you're interested, you can start a 30 day trial within your Licensing settings, and work with our support team to help you get things setup.
