Webmail From field does not show name (only email address)
Problem reported by Jim Rosemary - 9/26/2022 at 11:27 AM

Using Webmail we have found that unlike most mail clients, the FROM field only shows the email address.  This can be a little confusing since most email clients show the name of the sender along with the email address.  Is this something that can be changed on the webmail client?

It seems to me that it shows the email address AND the name (provided that the sender has declared his name ...):

Hey Jim! As Gabriele pointed out, the From field should show the Display Name assuming it was included in the EML content like this:
To: Kyle Kerst <kkerst@test.tld>
From: Tony Scholz <tscholz@test.tld>
This may be a byproduct of where/how those messages are being sent to you. Are you seeing this on all emails or just on ones being generated in a specific environment/client?

Hey Kyle and Gabriele, this isn't an issue with incoming messages.  Rather, it's an issue with the "From" field not showing the Display Name value of the user composting/sending the message.  The recipient on the other end sees only the e-mail address, not the Display Name.  Let me know if you see the same behavior.  Thanks!

I wonder if you are populating the user profile on the assumption that First and Last name will be concatenated to produce the display name.  First and Last name are used for query purposes only.   The "Display Name" field of the user profile must be populated explicitly.

Hey Jim,

Can you please share the header from one of the emails that are only showing the email address? Make sure to take out any sensitive information before you share.

Thanks,

Hi Zach,

Here's a screenshot of my profile, showing that the "Display Name" field is indeed filled:

Here's a screenshot of the "Compose" window:

If the message is received by someone who does not have me in their contacts list, the "From" field in the received e-mail only shows my e-mail address, no Display Name value.  In some cases, even if the contact is in the recipient's address book, it still only shows the e-mail address.  (If you DM me, I'll reply from webmail so you can see.)

Suggestions?

Thanks!

Hey Jim, thanks for your followup on this. If these emails are missing their Display Name information when sent from webmail; this would indicate the Display Name field for your user account in SmarterMail is not configured, or is configured with an email address. By default this is how the Display Name looks when sending from a new test account I set up for unrelated testing:
As you can see above, Gmail displays the Display Name as the email address, matching how it was configured in SmarterMail originally. Once updated with a real name, subsequent emails show the appropriate Display Name:

Can you check your Display Name value for your sending account for me? In the meantime, if those emails are being sent via a connected client, this would be something configured in the client itself as it is in charge of how the message envelope is formatted when created. I hope that helps!
