Sending an email as if it was from a shared account

We have a number of email users that need to send/receive from their own email as well as a company shared account. This seems like a fairly normal situation.
We thought using the web mail interface may work for us so we have shared the folders of the shared account to the users who need it, but we need a way for those users to send from the shared account.
We tried adding an smtp account with the credentials of the shared account which allowed sending from that account, however the sent email was saved in the users 'Sent Items' folder instead of the shared accounts 'Sent Items' folder.
Does anyone now how a shared account can be used properly in web mail. We are on a linux environment and are currently using Thunderbird to achieve this but was hoping smartermail would have better functionality otherwise the complexities of all the groupware in smartermail is just wasted.

Hello Allan, 

We are currently looking to see if this can be implemented in Outlook via MAPI as well as webmail. Currently this is still in the discussion stage to see if it is viable and what it would take.
