Latest SmarterMail Build 7565 doesn't onor the number of retries

Being Fixed
On the latest SmarterMail Build 7565 I have a lot of mail in the outbound queue that continue to retry and neve fails, even after 5000 retries.

In the setting "Retry Intervakl" I have 30 retries and after that I think the mail have to fail.
In the previous release it works fine...

Thank you.  That's very interesting.  There are only 1440 minutes in a 24-hour period.  You have specified 1155 minutes in the retry interval. So at most you should have had the six before it failed to deliver.  This definitely helps with troubleshooting.  I'll keep you posted.

I'm having the same problem. Some service providers seem to be blocking our server now due to excessive retries.

Here is one that has over 5,000 attempts. Others are at over 20,000. It seems like in many of these cases, one of the recipients has a permanent error. In the email below, one of the recipients does not exist on the email server, yet our server continues to retry it.

Hey,

I would like to add to this thread that SmarterMail is retrying when 5XX code is returned by the remote.

5XX are permanant errors and shouldn't be retried.
The remote servers can take this as an agression and ban us if we keep retrying after a 5XX.
5XX should trigger a DSN back to the sender. 

Only 4XX should be retried. 

(yes i know wikipedia is not the best source for this, but it's a good summary)

No updates yet. We had to go back to 7544 because of this and also the introduced IMAP folders mess (indroduced by the bogus translated folders, also no updates for this).

The issue is not fully fixed.

I think this option is involved:



It seems that the bounce message will never be delivered and SM continuously retry to send it

In SM 7544 the issue seems to be absent

Gabriele, can you describe the scenario you are running into with "Bounce messages when blocked by Outgoing SMTP Blocking"?  I have configured a custom spam rule that will cause any outbound messages to be blocked/quarantined. The sender is appropriately receiving the 550 bounce error message. In your scenario is this a user relaying through the server that isn't receiving a bounce?  Does that message exceed the retry interval count? If you could provide me with the HDR file, delivery logs, and, if enabled, debug log 22334, it would really help facilitate troubleshooting the issue further.

Gonzalo, can you please describe the scenario you're encountered.  Is it ALL remote delivery messages? Is it as Gabriele described somewhat related to the "Bounce messages when blocked by Outgoing SMTP Blocking?" Any details you can provide will help with troubleshooting.

Gonzalo, I have tried multiple times sending to recipient@gmail.ocm.  I receive the delivery error, but after my configured retry interval count, the message is properly bounced.  I have added LOTS of logging to the debug log id 22334.  Can you please install this custom build, enable debug log id 22334, and send that log over?

These are bounces from OUTBOUND ANTISPAM BLOCKING that are for a user that is on an Exchange Server (my SM server is used only as an outbound gateway)

@Robert Emmett - I've installed custom build you've provided, enabled debug log ID and sent this data to ticket 311-270046E0-0BD9 which might be related to this problem. Under this ticket you have also RSAA for main server instance and outgoing gateways so you can also check on your own.

EDIT: My problem is that clients are not receiving any bounces but I also just noticed similar situation with large number of delivery attempts and maybe somehow this two problems are related.

I installed version 7576 and activated log 22334 at 08:35 Spanish time. The retries add up to a total of 7 hours and at 15:30 (in Spain) the problem began to become visible

Gonzalo (and everyone else that provided files), that helped tremendously! I was able to trace the issue to a recent change that caused a NullReferenceException when generating the DSN message. If the Return-Path was to a non-local domain, the exception would occur breaking out of the remote delivery process too early. This was causing the repeated attempts to delivery the message and not properly remove that recipient from the HDR recipients list.  Anyway, below is a link to the custom build that resolves this issue:

Yes, the similar issue here, I lost the Spam Quarantine and now bad email just gets stuck in the Queue, trying to send over and over.

My Spam Quarantine still appears to be broken. It is empty. It normally has 100s or 1000s

I was having the same issue with mail stuck in the (waiting to deliver) spool and 7577 did resolve the issue, but now I have user complaints about IMAP folders not appearing in outlook 2019 that have "&" and "@" symbols.  Is this a known issue?

@Sébastien did you roll back to 7544?  I am considering it, but I do not know the process for rollback or issues that may occur and I am hesitant.  I did open a ticket on this as well.

Yes, I rolled back to 7544 on our prod server and triying every new release/custom build on our test server for these IMAP issues.
They are still present in 7577.
To install 7544 you must first uninstall the currently installed version or it will say that you already have a more recent version.
It will keep files, but be sure you have a snapshot or a backup, who knows, something wrong can happen, but the downgrade went well here.
No more customers complaining about IMAP issues (except some that now have duplicated folders created by outlook with the IMAP bogus versions).
