When mapping shared resources you will need to follow a few extra steps. This will be done per user. 

The GAL should already be downloaded by default. 

This is not showing in the list on the left, this is by design (Microsofts) as part of the protocol as some GALs are huge and can causing crashing issues. When adding the user you should get all items that are shared by that user ( folders, contacts, calendars ) all at the same time. 

Domain shared resources will not sync as they are just in SmarterMail web interface. Conference rooms should sync in the same was as the GAL.
