Is the integrated SpamAssassin working AND monitored/logged?
Question asked by Gabriele Maoret - SERSIS - 12/4/2019 at 12:58 AM
Answered
I've a question: in my SmarterMail server the Antispam Setting "SpamAssassin-Based Pattern Matching " is enabled and I'm using the integrated SpamAssassin because I have't an external one.

In the REPORTS, under "SpamAssassin Processing" I always see only "zero" both for successfull and for failed connections.

So it seems that Spam Assassin is not monitored or is not working.

Is it my system that has an issue?

Gabriele,

Since your license key has active Maintenance and Support, I would suggest submitting a support ticket for this so that one of our technicians can take a closer look for you.

Gabriele, was this issue solved?

I make the same experience right now.

Thanks!

Hi Martin. This issue is not fixed yet.

BTW, I did some tests and I found that if I use an external SpamAssassin this is logged in the reports, while the internal one does not.

We are removing our internal SpamAssassin Engine and moving to Rspamd which has much more functionality and will run as a daemon that can self update like ClamAV and Cyren now do.  We will continue to provide support for external SpamAssasin servers.

Tim, I like the idea of rspamd. Will this be fully integrated or would you recommend we start looking at creating another server to handle this? I know personally I would prefer not to have to purchase another server but would rather know ahead of time to start the learning/building process.

Based on our discussions, we intend on having it work much like ClamAV. Where we include or download the binaries automatically. The SmarterMail service itself will manage the process automatically sending emails to it for scanning, managing the settings, and keeping the process running at all times, if it's enabled for scanning. So it would take a lot out of the setup. We would also likely still provide an external IP field allowing the connection to an external rspamd daemon.
Pretty excited about this functionality based on some of the feedback by customers on the community about it along with some simple testing I've done.

TL;DR: You would not need another server, it would run locally with SmarterMail and it would be managed automatically by SmarterMail.

Moving to rspamD is great news. But I'm wondering how it would be achieved on a Windows platform. As far as I know it doesn't run on windows ? Maybe using WSL2, containers, HyperV VM running a linux distrib?

Also having support for external rspamD would be nice too as you can have clusters of rspamD that you can loadbalance or at least round-robin.

Hello

@Tim: Great news, do you have a already a release date for "Rspamd"?

I wrote, that external SpamAssassin-server will be supported. How a about a local SpamAssassin listen on local host? As you know, some people are using the few windows compiled versions of SpamAssassin.

We are looking at putting it in a container.  Also, we will support external which will be clearly the easiest and be available first.  The internal SpamAssassin will be removed sooner than later because it is outdated and can cause high CPU at times.

Does the external connection not work for this scenario if you bind to 127.0.0.1? If this scenario doesn't work I'd almost consider that a bug, even though it's "external" that should still theoretically work. I have not tried that recently, if this is your experience let us know, I'd like to investigate that.

@Matt: local SampAssasin on 127.0.0.1 configured as "external" works like a charm (we are using SpamAssasin for Windows and i love it)

@TIM: rSpamd integrated in SmarterMail is a GREAT NEWS!!! I'm looking forward to it!

@Matt: Maybe i was not exactly enough, sorry.

My question ist, if the integrated SpamAssassin is replaced wth "Rspamd ", will the setting "Remote SpamAssassin" also be canceled? Some people are using SpamAssassin for Windows from "JAM Software", that's why i'm asking.

@Martin, we will keep the Remote SpamAssassin options. It is just the internal SpamAssassin codebase that is being removed.

rSpamD is kickass :) We've had overwhelming positive statements from customers. Even picky customers have stated the "new solution" works extremely well. Even without Cyren or Sniffer running next to it.

I think we will investigate creating a separate rSpamD server with the external functionality to save on stress on the mail server and let have a dedicated mail server. Now to figure out Linux and document every step.

When will we be able to use it as an external solution?

John,

Getting rSpamd setup and running is cake, super easy to deploy and get going. Tweaking it though can be a bit much, there is a ton it can do. The biggest issue was getting a user list to postfix so postfix knows what addresses are valid recipients, so we wrote a custom app that builds the required postfix hash databases to validate recipients. The only other issue we have at this point is SmarterMail has no settings to prohibit accepting non-authenticated SMTP sessions outside of whitelisted IP addresses.

Right now though though you have to run it as a gateway that processes inbound mail, not as a daemon like SA or ClamAV.

Having it as a remote spam service within SmarterMail would be very interesting! It would also be AMAZING if SmarterTools would bring back the ham/spam folders so that we can train our rSpamd gateways with those messages.

I agree with echoDreamz on SPAM/HAM folders...

We just installed the Spam Assassin in a Box this weekend. All default settings (I'll be tweaking after a week of use -- if needed). Spam has dropped tremendously (e.g., over 90%) since installing. If throughout the week it continues to do this well we'll definitely opt for their $49.95 single license for a year.

If RSPAMD is added and equally good we'll definitely be including that as well.

Now nearly a year has passed by and i think, that everbody likes to know, if SmarterTools wants to integrate Rspamd into SmarterMail.

Okay, no answer is also an answer. I assume, that the integration of Rspamd into SmarterMail has no priority at all.

Hey Martin,

Thanks for reaching out again. I will check with the developers and my team about Rspamd and see if it's something that would still be worth adding. Based on what Tim said on this thread https://portal.smartertools.com/community/a94132/report-spam-button.aspx
It sounds like we might have some different plans for handling spam in the future.

But Rspmd might be a thing worth looking into again.

I will submit this as a feature request.

Kind Regards,

We have a pretty amazing release coming before end of year.

SpamAssasin rules are greatly enhanced.

rSpamD external servers will be supported via HTTP, simliar to how we support External ClamAV and SpamAssasin servers.

Those that are using MessageSniffer Add-on will benefit from updated libraries and functionality.

Many other improvements related to SPAM, Training of HAM / SPAM (Third party clients / Webmail), Safety of Emails you are viewing, Unsubscribing assistance and more!

Domain Administrator features to protect mailbox access and attacks.

This is just some of what is coming!

Hello Tim

Wow, that are great news! It is a very good idea to support an external server running Rspamd. This will fit everybody needs. Awesome!
