When we create a new workspace in SmarterMail Enterprise Version - 16.3.6821 and try to open a Video Chat, we faced the error as shown below:

How can we overcome this?

Thanks

Hi, Ng

When Appear.in was implemented in SmarterMail 16.x, they offered a free plan, that required no registration, that would allow you to set up a conference with up to 8 attendees. After some time, they limited the number of attendees. Now, it appears as if they're requiring registration in order to set up a conference. That is, unfortunately, what happens when tying in a free service: if they change policies or processes, that's their prerogative.

Does signing up make a difference? AS an aside, in SmarterMail 17.x, coming out in a few weeks, we've built in our own XMPP-based conferencing solution. So, if you haven't yet, you may want to download, install and test out the BETA of SmarterMail 17. You can find more info here: Getting Started with the SmarterMail 17.x BETA

Ng,

I moved your last reply to this thread, in the SmarterMail 17.x BETA category: https://portal.smartertools.com/community/a91203/team-workspaces-doesnt-recognize-camera.aspx as you brought up an issue with Team Workspaces in 17.x.

Regarding 16.x and Appear.in, if you actually sign up for an account you should be able to create a meeting. They DO have a free account for up to 4 participants in a single room.

Not the greatest implementation for those of us who purchased SM 16 with the specific selling point of video conferencing.... If I remember correct, it was one of the main features that was added to edition 16.  I think SM should have arranged something with appear.in to retain functionality without adding the extra step of registration.  Registration may seem easy, but for the folks at our office, that is not easily done.

Appear.in was acquired and they're consolidating services and infrastructure. Nothing we can do.

This is a perfect example of why we have made the changes we have. SmarterMail is a HUGE software product with millions of lines of code and integrations with dozens of companies (via API, protocols or included libraries). We are also very dependent on things not in our control such as: iOS, Android, MacOS, Samsung, OnePlus, antivirus providers, anti-malware providers, firewall companies and the list could go on.

It is impossible to keep old versions of our products which have significantly different code bases supporting not only old technologies but even more so the new technologies. This is why the software industry is transitioning into software as a service!

Hope this helps and I appreciate you bringing up the appear.in changes. It really is a perfect example of what we face on a daily basis. In most cases, we can avoid customers seeing these changes but clearly appear.in is a customer facing scenario. This is also why we transitioned to providing our own audio/video solution with SmarterMail -- we control it and we can make changes and updates to it that our customers want.

Yes you can. Give all users from with license sm16 free sm17 license.
It is not our fault. Sm16 has been admitted that video conferencing is capable. You have trouble agreeing with the suppliers. The sm17 video component must be placed on sm16. Each user has the right to use the service that he has paid for.

At no point do we guarantee Appear. In, Google, Microsoft or ANY third party will continue providing their services.  The new Team Workspaces and functionality isn't compatible with past versions of our products.

I noticed you allowed your Upgrade Protection to expire  almost 10 months ago and any new major release and features wouldn't be available for you.

The world has changed and we are adapting our business model to provide customers small and more frequent releases as we attempt to adapt to all the changing products, services and devices.

Tim, exactly. We build integrations for WHMCS, gateways, addon modules etc. We did one for Google Wallet that was pretty popular, nearly 800 installs of it. After, 2 years or so of us selling the module, Google announced it was killing off Google Wallet and that the API would stop working etc. Lots of upset customers wanting refunds etc. Why? How is this our fault? We integrated a Company's product into our product so you could offer it as a payment method to your customers, said Company retired said product. We stopped selling the module the moment it was announced of course, still offered bug fixes and what not to existing clients until the API was fully retired. We didnt go to Google demanding that they refund our customers or anything like that. It is simply the nature of the business sometimes.

What if Dropbox decides tomorrow that January 1st is our last day in business. All APIs etc. will stop working then. SmarterMail has integration with dropbox, they integrated a useful product into theirs, they have no control over if the product or service decides to close up shop, merge with another company etc.

Or how about the butt loads of Gene6 licenses we bought, then they just disappeared off the planet one day... Stuff happens and you move on.

"I noticed you allowed your Upgrade Protection to expire  almost 10 months ago and any new major release and features wouldn't be available for you. " Yes of course, we have to wait for 100+ updates for sm16, so long we stay on 15.7 stable version. But now we want to use it, and its running on our server. The whole team workspace is unusable without voice and video. We know the problem with appear.in, but how use team workspace without video and voice?

"At no point do we guarantee Appear. In, Google, Microsoft or ANY third party will continue providing their services."

Ok, i agree with it.

But in this case is this not only an external service for smartermail. This is the main core functionality of the team workspaces. If Dropbox for example doesn't working, who cares? Or external spam providers, who cares. The whole system working without them.
But the complete team workspace is dead without video or voice.

This is why there is an SM17 update that address this issue. If you have active maintenance, install it and walla, problem solved...
