Increased CPU usage
Problem reported by Silvija Buric - 4/23/2018 at 6:21 AM

Hello,
we have noticed similar issue with high CPU usage on multiple SmarterMail instances with different versions.

From what we have diagnosed, all the instances have increased counter .NET Remoting > Remote Calls/sec for MailService which directly correlates with high CPU usage:

This is an SmarterMail instance with one domain, with all the services stopped, and without any external network connections.

Here is a Process Explorer screenshot:

Restarting the MailService resolves the problem, but it occured next day at 13:00 (there are no scheduled tasks defined on this system).

Ours stops responding every-single-night between 6-7PM... So join the fun club. Ours though, CPU drops to 0 and the server stops responding for many seconds, then CPU usage skyrockets, then the cycle repeats until restarted.

Did you see the changelog for 16.3.6684 https://www.smartertools.com/smartermail/release-notes/16 it does mention reduced CPU usage for an issue with duplicate events.

We've upgraded to 16.3.6684. We'll see how it behaves today.

Same issue with 16.3.6684.
At the exact same time of day (12:00), CPU increases to 50%, then after 1 hour it goes ballistic to 100%.
CPU usage chart from PRTG:

Again, all the services are stopped, there are no connections to server.

Nikola, if you are willing, I would suggest opening a ticket support. We can then provide you with a profiling build and if used in conjunction with JetBrain's dot Trace and dot Memory at the time in which the server CPU increases, we will be able to gather very detailed dump information.

Would love to hear the results

Hi Robert, I've opened a support ticket.

Was there any resolve on this issue? Even with the latest builds I'm having SmarterMail still eat up 100% of my cpu pretty constant and about once a week or so having to restart services to get webmail to work at any decent speed.

Adam, can you run a file proc on your server and see if any particular calendarData.xml file is getting written to more than usual?  I have had a couple of tickets where there were calendars with hundreds of duplicate entries which was directly contributing to the slow down.

Robert, I don't see anything out of the ordinary pegging high I/O, when we're in 100% cpu we're only averaging about 2-300 kbytes/sec disk I/O.

I am seeing the same issue after upgrading from 16X to the more recent major build. No idea what triggers it yet but the CPU will go from average of 5-10% to all of a sudden pegged until I restart the service, around 24 hours later, the same thing happens again.
