Migrate from SM13 on Server 2003 to SM16 on Server 2012 R2

I'll be migrating from an old install of SM 13 on Server 2003 to a new Server 2012 R2 install. Can I simply install the new version of SmarterMail on the new server and migrate over, or should I install SM 13 on the new server, perform the migration, and then upgrade SM to the newest version?

I plan on following the steps in the "Migrate SmarterMail to a Different Server" KB article, but it didn't specify whether I could migrate to a new version or if they should be the same.

Hi Joe,

We tend to recommend that you migrate to the same version. Install version 13.x on the new server and follow the steps in Migrate SmarterMail to a Different Server to get your data in the correct location. Then perform a Major Upgrade of SmarterMail.

Hi Andrea,

Thanks for the quick reply. That's what I was leaning towards, but I didn't want to do extra steps if they weren't required. I'll plan on installing the same version and migrating to that, just to be safe. :)
