Declude integration
Question asked by Ali Mualla - 8/24/2017 at 5:46 PM

Hi all,

First, thanks to SmarterTools for making available a fully featured free edition of SmarterMail. I have been happily using it for my personal email for a good 5 years :D

I upgradeded yesterday to 16.2.6442, and have a couple of questions regarding integration with Declude 4.12.11 for SmarterMail :
  • Once installed and configured (filter files, etc), do I need to do anything in order for SmarterMail to start using it?
  • How do I check that SmarterMail is actually using Declude for spam filtering?
I checked the KB for both SmarterMail and Declude, and looked in both Settings and Reports sections, but couldn't find anything related to Declude beyond the spam rule (which was how I found about Declude in the first place).

Thanks,
Ali

In answering my own question, and since I wanted to distinguish between messages marked as spam by SpamAssassin and those marked by Declude, I edited $default$.junkmail file in the declude folder (inside the SmarterMail installation folder) and changed the actions for WEIGHT10/WEIGHT14/WEIGHT20 to SUBJECT [Spam-Declude-10]/SUBJECT [Spam-Declude-14]/SUBJECT [Spam-Declude-20] respectively. This way, messages tagged as spam will be distinguished in the subject, along with the score attributed by Declude, which helps tune spam deletion score.
I've done the same in SpamAssassin, editing local.cf under %SpamAssassin_Install_folder%\etc\spamassassin\ and uncommented "rewrite_header" and changed its value to "Subject [Spam-SA]" (all sans quotes).
I've already got a few messages tagged by each, and a couple tagged by both, confirming both SpamAssassin and Declude are working. Still, would be nice to be able to confirm Declude is working from anywhere within SmarterMail's web interface.

Hi Ali. Unfortunately, there is no way to tell if Declude is working from within the SmarterMail web interface. There are a few ways to tell if it is working. First, make sure that you have Declude checked for Filtering in your SmarterMail admin interface. Secondly, you log into your server directly and check to make sure messages are flowing to the SmarterMail\Spool\proc folder and then out to the SmarterMail\Spool\work folder and finally out to the Spool. Each message in the spool which is prefixed with an "X" has been scanned by Declude. Lastly, you can check the headers of an email to see if X-Declude headers are present. If they are, the message has been scanned by Declude. I hope this helps. Thanks!

Btw, my company, Mail's Best Friend, owns Declude and we fully support it so if you have any other questions about it, please ask. Thanks.

Hi Linda,
I had written this question with the intention of sending it to you by email, but saw on your profile here that the last time you had posted here was in January, and so wasn't sure if you were still at Mail's Best Friend or still doing community support. Thank you very much for your replies :)

I ended editing $default$.junkmail and set all three weight levels to modify the email's subject with a custom tag. Now I see spam messages often tagged by Declude in the message's subject, hence confirming it is working, and which messages it thinks are spam.

Thanks for the clarification :)

Ali, I had 2 profiles here for some reason. I asked SmarterTools support to merge them. When they did, it looked like I had not posted here in a long time when in fact, I'm in here almost every day. I'm glad I found you. :)

Can you provide more details on " $default$.junkmail " as I am not sure where or how you are making this setting.

In your data folder (mine is at C:\SmarterMail) you should have a folder named "declude" after installing Declude on your mail server. In there, there is a file named "$default$.junkmail". I edited that file to have the following lines:

WEIGHT10 SUBJECT [Spam-Declude-10]
WEIGHT14 SUBJECT [Spam-Declude-14]
WEIGHT20 SUBJECT [Spam-Declude-20]
WEIGHT30 HOLD %DATE%

Hope this answers your question.
