Review attachments after they are added to new email
Idea shared by Karl Jones - 2/19/2016 at 6:36 PM
Planned
I am acting as Consultant and administrator for several non profit clients who, at my recommendation, use the 10 user version and one client who has just purchased the enterprise version with activesync. They have many questions about certain features they were able to use with Outlook.
I am going to create a different thread for each one and will repeat this intro for each one.

In outlook the users are able to add an attachment which they can then click on to open and review before finally sending. As they have many version of certain documents they always review before they send. is it possible to do this with smartermail or can it be made an available feature.?

Hey Karl,

At this time it's not possible to review an attachment once it's been appended to an email message, aside from verifying the file name in the list of attachments.

I can see the value in adding this functionality. When you receive an email message, you can click on the image thumbnail to preview it before downloading, and I can see how it would be beneficial to click on image you've just uploaded to ensure it's the correct one. I'll change this thread to a Proposed Idea to facilitate tracking on this request. Other users can vote up the thread and add their input on its implementation. While this does not guarantee the functionality will be added, it does get it in front of our developers so they can see its popularity and usefulness.

Thank you!

Thank you Andrea.
I look forward to other users agreeing that this might be a useful feature and voting accordingly.

Wanted to bump this as there are a number of clients who want this implemented as soon as possible.

I wanted to bump this now that 16 has been released, i see the feature is not currently enabled. Are there plans to do so..??

I'm adding to my own thread but the reason is that i'm about to lose a customer to the smartermail interface because they can't do pdf attachment review to make sure the right pdf is attached before they send it, neither can they optimise images before sending and they also decided they don't like the new interface.
So i'm about to go through all the users and install and setup outlook 2010 unless i can attend to the issues that the users are reporting and right now and how it has been under V15 was "sorry, it's not able to do that yet"

I'm sure you're already aware of ongoing issues with Outlook and SM. Many of these issues are due to Microsoft constantly changing how the different versions of Outlook behave. Be sure to test this fully before deploying.

Some are already using Outlook 2010 because there were too many things that SM couldn't do that they needed, now it looks like they want all users to go back to Outlook... No different than Exchange but pointless having a advanced API if it can't be used for what the users do all day.... well i tried..!!

Thanks! Then I'm curious to know if you're still on SM15, and if that combination with Outlook is doing all you need it to do, and doing it well.

Users were using Outlook 2007/2010 under SM15 and those same users are still on Outlook under SM16, Obviously i have updated and it appears that the new interface was too much for the users who were using SM exclusively??!!
Outlook users didn't and don't appear to be having problems. I have them using IMAP and others are connecting using activesync.

I guess they need 1/ "review attachments before sending to make sure they have the right attachment 2/ Optimise a image before sending an email. 3/ and the ability to archive their own emails rather than rely on global archive which iv'e turned off"
There were more but i can't recall them right now.
I'm still trying to figure out admin features and where they all are...!!!

Hi Karl,

I unfortunately have no updates on this functionality at the moment. I'll keep you posted as I hear more!

Thanks for the update Andrea. it's a pity.... it is a deal killer for my users, they attach and email quotes and other auto generated docs and identifying them by name is hard so they open them before sending to make sure they have attached the correct ones. Not really sire why it is so hard to implement as the attachment is right there on the email. :-)

All,

I know this is a feature request from awhile ago, so I wanted to provide some follow up. We've slated this for addition to SmarterMail 17.x. As of now, there are a lot of other features to implement -- or re-implement -- in 16.x. So I'm going to change the status of this to "Planned" as it IS coming.

Thanks Derek, i take it that reviewing the attachment is not a simple process to implement.!?

Although I love seeing you have a roadmap for beyond 16 I truly think core functionality should be in the system now. I say that being that we jumped onboard as this is an Exchange replacement and not part of a replacement. At a minimum we should have the core functionality of what we would get with Exchange. I propose that rather than jumping from 16.1 or 16.2 to 17 we take 1-year and lock down 16.x so that it rocks compared to Exchange in performance and price. A higher number means nothing to any of our users. What matters is the performance, price, and being on-par with our competitors (e.g. Outlook 365 and gmail as the primary ones).

Bumping again seeing as it's become a popular question for some staff who just use Smartermail (webmail) rather than Outlook

Hey Karl! :-) I did a quick test of this on our latest version being tested internally, but found its not yet possible to open/review already attached files at this time. I recommend keeping an eye on our Release Notes page (https://www.smartertools.com/smartermail/release-notes/current) for updates on feature requests as we don't usually post updates to new functionality here in the community. Have a good one!
