Send User Spam Feedback Options in SmarterMail

When a system administrator is configuring Antispam Options, there are a couple of settings that may need a bit more explanation: Send user spam feedback to antispam providers and Send user spam feedback to training folder. Put simply, enabling one or both of these settings will help improve the accuracy of spam filtering by contributing data either to third-party antispam providers or internal spam training systems. In addition, these settings work in conjunction with the Move to Junk button available on messages in the webmail client. When one or both of these settings are enabled they will affect any messages that get moved to the Junk Email folder when that button is pressed. If neither option is enabled, then the message is simply moved to the Junk Email folder.

Send User Spam Feedback to Antispam Providers
This option allows SmarterMail to forward spam samples reported by users to supported third-party antispam providers. These reports help improve global spam filtering accuracy.

Which antispam providers are currently supported?
As of now, SmarterMail supports the following antispam providers for user-submitted feedback:
  • Rspamd
  • Cyren
What is sent to the antispam providers?
SmarterMail sends the entire EML file of the reported message. This provides the antispam provider with the full context of the message, including headers, body content, and any attachments, to ensure accurate analysis and training.

Send User Spam Feedback to Training Folder
This option is designed for internal spam filtering improvements. When enabled, reported messages are saved to a special training folder on the server, allowing administrators to manually review and use them for further tuning of spam filters.

Where is the training folder located?
The training folder is automatically created under the Spool directory with the name Training.

On Linux:
/var/lib/smartermail/Spool/Training
On Windows:
C:\SmarterMail\Spool\Training
Messages stored here can be used for manual spam training or processed by scripts or other filtering tools.

Best Practices
  • Enable both options for maximum effectiveness: contribute to global spam filters and improve your local spam filtering system.
  • Periodically review the Training folder to ensure it's not growing too large and to verify submitted messages.
