Lone messages are marked as read

If I have the web interface open and if my inbox is empty and a new message comes in, it immediately gets marked as read. Subsequent messages work fine, but email #1 always just marked as read as soon as it is received. I keep my inbox at zero, so this is causing a lot of frustration.
