SM 14 Enterprise & Plesk 12?
Question asked by CCWH - 8/11/2015 at 10:16 AM

Hello all,

We currently use WebSitePanel (WSP) 2.0 for client management.  It allows clients to create mail accounts and manage their hosting from a single control panel.

We would like to migrate away from WSP to Plesk.  All run on Windows server.  My question is...is there any issues with compatibility for Plesk 12 and SM 14?  Anyone had any issues with account creation etc.?

Hi
We use exactly that setup. Plesk 12, SM 14.xxx, on a windows 2008 Server. It all works well so far that we have seen.  No real show stopper issues between the two.

There are a few quirks though.  some I have been asking and yet to have anyone answer - plesk or smartytools

For instance. when we set up a new domain in plesk :
It creates the DNS entries.  then interfaces to smartermail and creates the email accounts.
"Something" does not properly BIND the "mail." to the domain for the location to access web based mail. And, I can not find any setting anywhere to define that option.

So, for instance, we want "mail.HawaiianHope.org" to be our webmail location.  When first creating the domain, even though we had the DNS defined, that location was not created. However.... "webmail.HawaiianHope.org" WAS created but we never defined "webmail." anywhere in our system that i am aware of.  (it took us 3 days to discover this too)

It (something) does this for every domain we create.  We have to manually go into the server DNS and BIND "mail." to the domain and remove "webmail." from the domain BINDing.  easily done, but its a pain in the ass to have to manually babysit "automation" products.

I have been asking both smartermail and plesk for about 2 months now which product is responsible for creating "webmail." or where i can define the setting, and neither company has responded yet.

But overall, the 2 products work VERY well with each other (my opinion).

On a separate note about plesk.
While i like the product it also has some items that i think needs adjusting.
Here is a link to a posting i made there :

Not sure how (WSP) 2.0 works, BUT,
In a control panel, if you create a user account and then multiple domains for the account, this is what I am expecting to see :
FirstDomainCreated.tld
     |----- httpdocs
SecondDomainCreated.tld
     |----- httpdocs
ThirdDomainCreated.tld
     |----- httpdocs

but with plesk this is what it does.
FirstDomainCreated.tld
     |----- httpdocs
     |----- SecondDomainCreated.tld
            |----- httpdocs
     |----- ThirdDomainCreated.tld
            |----- httpdocs

Giving root access to the first domain created grants full access to every other domain in the account, they are not managed independently

Thanks for the information, really appreciated.

Very weird re the Binding of Mail/Webmail.  It's not such an issue for us as all clients use our mail domains for their incoming/outgoing POP/IMAP/SMTP etc. plus the webmail is also our domain.  Makes it far more straightforward for us!

I am planning to move to Plesk and the Odin (Parallels) people who showed me the demo, mentioned that Smartertools people are not willing to continue working with Odin to create a link between both products in the near future, so they suggested NOT to use SM.... hmmm....

Well, if we are ever forced to have to choose, I think SM would win hands down. Only 1 or 2 of us in the organization deal with plesk.  EVERY customer we have uses SmarterMail, and out of 200 accounts, I think maybe 3 of them actually log into plesk to manage anything. The end users could care less about plesk and their satisfaction with our services is mainly based on their daily interaction with email. Half don't even have a website !

But even if they don't play nice with each other, both are still great products. and even at the current stage, there is still a bit of manual configuration between the two that has to take place anyway, so... not sure it would really matter even if they treated each other like an arguing couple and just ignored each other... we would still have to spend time with each independently.
