Oulook not clearing connections.

So I have seen outlook not clear connections before, and it does not usually create a big issue. I know the user is connecting over and over because when I go to Manage > User Activity > online users, I can see the email address of a user over and over. Same user, even though they are set up on just one machine. I see the one IP and I see several connections.
 
Today a user sent one message to someone. That email message resent itself over 40 time. The messages all had a separate message ID so it appeared as though the user had sent message over and over, As if she sent 40+ messages about 3 minutes apart.
 
My customer gave me their IP and I checked
Manage > Current Connections > all connections.
They had 7 connections over the outgoing port (587). Durring the call of about 20 minutes it would increase to as many as 10 and as few as 1. This user is at their home, and they only have one machine, and no mail on their smart phone.
 
When I looked back at Manage > User Activity > online users I only saw her web mail connection.  I did not want them to send a test, as they were getting angry messages from the recipient. I told her to use webmail when sending for now, and I would look into the issue.
 
I have seen outlook not clear the connections, and then get the user blocked for my concurrent connections limit on the server. I have not seen the multiple emails send like this though. I am not even sure it is related. The other thing odd is she claims that it is only the one recipient. I have posted the basic delivery log below to show the frequency. The names have been changed to protect the internet mischievousness.

This is what usually happens when an email gets stuck in the sender's Outlook Outbox. It can be caused by a number of factors, such as data corruption in their Outlook PST file, their Anti-Virus Scanner taking too long to scan outgoing messages, but in my experience it happens when their Outlook PST file reaches the maximum file size (2GB on FAT and I think it's 15GB on NTFS) and there is no room left to move the message from the Outlook Outbox to the Outlook Sent Items folder. Having the client Archive old emails, or delete old emails, is usually enough to resolve the problem in most cases. However, I can say with all certainty that it is an Outlook problem with a message stuck in their Outlook Outbox, and not a Smartermail issue. (We have at least 1 customer a month with this same exact problem.)

Thank you for the great reply. I too have seen issues like these and your post reminded me that it was with norton and some interference with the smarter mail connections. Disabling norton did the trick, but not many people  to disable their A/V.  I will have her check the PST file size, that does make a lot of sense. 
 
Thank goodness for smarter mail logs, they really aid in trouble shooting. Open to other replies if any one else cares to chime in.
