Seperate sites for domains
Question asked by Nvard Khachatryan - 10/9/2014 at 2:43 AM
Answered
Hello!

I want to make customized webmail view for different domains. I plan to make copies of MRS folder for each domain, and make customization. So the question is:

Is it safe to have separate IIS sites for each domain with single SmarterMail installation?

In testing environment, everything is working and OK, however, I wonder if any security issues will arise.

Thank you in advance

While this will work, to a point, it is not recommended, because every time you do an upgrade, whether major or minor, you will have to delete all of the locations you have created and re-create both the files which are located in the domain-specific MRS directories and the customizations.

The use of separate IIS host header configurations is also not required, as that will require you to use separate pubic IP addresses for each of your customized domains.

This can all be accomplished through CUSTOM CSS for each of the domains.

Within each e-mail domain you are hosting in SmarterMail, there is a CUSTOMIZATION area which is DOMAIN SPECIFIC.

To customize the color and other settings for the DOMAIN, login as the DOMAIN ADMINISTRATOR and go to  SETTINGS ===> DOMAIN SETTINGS ===> PERSONALIZATION

SmarterMail Domain Customization Settings
SmarterMail Domain Customization Settings
Once there, you will see this window in the right-hand frame:

SmarterMail PERSONALIZATION Screen
SmarterMail PERSONALIZATION Screen
Clicking on the OVERRIDE SETTINGS option will enable the COLORS and CUSTOM CSS tabs within that menu:

Personalization with OVERRIDE SETTINGS selected
Personalization with OVERRIDE SETTINGS selected
This will then allow you to customize the COLORS throughout the entire domain:

PERSONALIZATION ===> COLORS
PERSONALIZATION ===> COLORS
The CUSTOM CSS tab will enable you to create custom CSS code for various pages and apply that to the formatting, overriding the standard formatting.

PERSONALIZATION ===> CUSTOM CSS
PERSONALIZATION ===> CUSTOM CSS
Remember, no matter what you do to customize your SmarterMail installation, you must keep the name of the produce visible at all times.  Per section 9 of the SmarterMail EULA, available at:

9. Limitations to Customization.

Should You choose to alter the appearance and/or user interface of the Software (the "Skin") by using the custom style or Skin options included in certain versions of the Software or by using a third-party process to alter the appearance or interface of the Software, the following requirements must be met:

* You shall maintain and not remove or obscure any proprietary notices in the Software. The SmarterTools name may be displayed in any font type or style, but it must be displayed in no smaller than 8-point font. The name of the Software shall remain visible to the naked eye and free from any clutter or similar color scheme (e.g. black font on a black or similarly dark background that would preclude the user from easily identifying the Software). Use of the qualifiers "powered by" and "provided by" is permitted (e.g. "Powered by SmarterMail"). Any deviation from these limitations must be approved in writing by SmarterTools in advance of implementation and may result in additional license fees, if applicable.

* All applicable copyright and trademark information shall not be removed, remain visible to the naked eye, free from any clutter or similar color scheme, and can be displayed in any font type or style but shall be displayed in no smaller than 8-point font."

More information on customization is available via SmarterMail help.  To get context sensitive help, just click on HELP ===> ONLINE HELP while on the page for which you require help.

Thank you for your quick and detailed answer.

I fully understand the difficulties you mentioned for maintaining multiple sites.
In fact the changes will be quite deep, including new UserControls and Sidebar Sections, so cannot be done with simple CSS modifications. I just wondered if SmarterMail back-end software will maintain correct connections with multiple sites. It seems this will not cause any problems :)

Thanks again.

You raise a valid question with your last response, Nvard.

While the use of CSS, to customize SmarterMail, is not well documented, and there has been some discussion about better CSS documentation, I would not set aside the capabilities of CSS.

Perhaps someone from SmarterMail / SmarterTools can jump into this conversation and bring further information about a CSS modifications manual for SmarterMail and the other SmarterTools products.
