Track PPC ads by IP?
Question asked by scottsimard - 9/19/2014 at 2:57 PM

I thought what I was looking to do is simple but apparently not.....I just want to track clicks/visits by IP so that I can find flagrant abuse.  I don't really need to know what page they're going to, but if someone has 50 visits over 10 days I'd like to know.

Seems very difficult so far to generate a report that does this?

Under Site Activity -> Visitors -> IP Addresses, you'll find a report that lists IP address traffic and the various metrics that are recorded for that IP address.  Do keep in mind that where SmarterStats is log-based analysis, this isn't going to directly  correlate to to clicks on a specific link though.  The IP Addresses Report though should meet your requirements as you can set a date range and the number of hits are listed for each IP address.  Just take a look and let me know if you have any specific questions.

Tracking PPC ads by IP is technically possible using advanced analytics tools or server logs, but it’s not something Google Ads officially supports — and for good reason. Google masks most IP addresses to protect user privacy, and advertisers are not given direct access to this data.

Here’s why tracking PPC ads by IP is generally discouraged or limited:

  1. Privacy Restrictions: Platforms like Google Ads and GDPR regulations restrict advertisers from accessing identifiable user data like IPs.

  2. Limited Use Cases: Even if you could track IPs, it wouldn’t give you much actionable insight unless tied to specific behavior or leads, which is hard to legally and ethically do.

  3. Click Fraud Monitoring: Some tools like ClickCease or PPC Protect allow limited IP tracking to prevent click fraud, but even then, IPs can change or be masked via VPNs.

  4. HubSpot, Google Analytics, and CRM tools no longer show IP addresses for individual leads in most default configurations due to privacy updates.

Alternative approach: Instead of trying to track IPs, focus on UTM parameters, conversion tracking, audience insights, and retargeting pixels — these provide much better data on user behavior while staying compliant.

If you're running PPC ads and want advanced tracking or fraud protection, a professional PPC agency like Logelite Pvt. Ltd. can set up everything from conversion funnels to audience segmentation without violating privacy norms.
