Major Upgrade License Activation Question
Question asked by Jim Vaden - 12/9/2014 at 2:12 PM
Answered
Instructions for upgrading from SM v12 to v13 say:  "If you were running with an activated license key, you will need to reactivate using a license key for the new version."

So do I need to request a new license key BEFORE upgrading or do I just need to know my old license key for v12?

You need to request before. Otherwise you will get an error when you log in. That's what happened to us as I forgot to do that first. Once I noticed I went in and had the new key within a few minutes but I would request it first.

they do not speak of a new license key.. but a new version of smartermail
just look up your license key you use now for v12 and use it in the upgraded version

good luck with the upgrade

Good day Jim,

Thanks for the confirmation on the process of going from SmarterMail 12.x to 13.x. I can verify that you are licensed for the SmarterMail 13.x build and you should follow the knowledge base article on upgrading.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you.

So then you are fixing the improper install instructions that he referenced?

The instructions as they are listed are not incorrect as you may not always use the same license key with an upgrade. Your key just needs to be valid for the version you are upgrading to. The KB has been modified slightly to make this more clear.

I just meant: "If you were running with an activated license key that is eligible for upgrade, activation will carry over." something along those lines...
