Undelete only recently deleted Emails
Question asked by Paul White - August 3, 2016 at 5:08 PM

A client called me recently because their phone accidently deleted all the messages in their inbox.  All the messages got moved to there deleted Items Folder. The problem is the messages they deleted go back from today, to several months ago.  They have about 17,000 messages in their deleted Items folder, but they only need to recover about 100 of them.  Its too time consuming to go through each email one by one restore them.  I have looked at the IMAP logs and found the commands that deleted the files.  Is there anyway to sort the emails in the deleted emails folder by the datetime it was deleted rather than the datetime the message was received?  This would greatly help in restoring the messages back to the inbox.  The only option I can see at this point is to restore the messages by recovering the Date Based GRP files from the inbox.  Can anyone else suggestion a better way?

I have Recuvva running a Deep Scan to see if it can recover the GRP files from inbox folder.  If that fails my next option is to copy paste the GRP files form the deleted Items folder that have a Date Modified from the incident date and time or more recent.  Granted that will restore all emails from those given dates, but its better than trying to sort through 17,000 emails in his deleted items folder one by one.  Any other suggestions let me know.

If SmarterTools would fix the auto-clean for Deleted Items to make it work like every other email server: http://portal.smartertools.com/community/a1088/fix-auto-clean-process.aspx

Then we could turn on the 30-day purge and...
  • users wouldn't have 17,000 messages in Deleted Items
  • there might be a 'date deleted' stored with each message
Here's a suggestion for ST: when the user deletes a message, store it in a GRP file with today's date, not the date the message was received. This would make it super easy to recover all the messages that were deleted today. And it would make it easy to purge messages after 30 days.

Looks like the same issue "Feature Suggestion: Modification to Auto-Clean Process #1"
