Cyren unusable after server migration – what weight are you using for SpamFoo?

Hi everyone,

Since I migrated my SmarterMail server to a new machine, Cyren has become unusable for me. I haven’t been able to reactivate the license, and although I opened a ticket, it looks like the issue is on Cyren’s side.

For the last 7 days my logs have been full of entries like these:

[2026.10.19] 12:03:42.083 [98260945] [CyrenIP Client] Cyren Error: Could not scan, No enabled services provided by Cyren based on license key.
[2026.10.19] 12:03:42.799 [98260884] [CyrenIP Client] Cyren Error: The operation has timed out.
[2026.10.19] 12:03:42.800 [98260927] [CyrenIP Client] Cyren Error: The operation has timed out.
[2026.10.19] 12:03:42.825 [98260941] [CyrenIP Client] Cyren Error: The operation has timed out.
...

This morning I also noticed that the timeouts were slowing down spam checking significantly, so I’ve disabled both Cyren IP and Cyren Anti-Spam entirely.

I’ve been watching SpamFoo for a while and it looks quite reliable. For now I’ve given it a low weight (2).

A few questions:

  • What weight have you set for SpamFoo?
  • Is anyone already running it in production, and how is it performing?
  • Has anyone else had Cyren license issues after a server migration?

To be honest, without Cyren I haven’t noticed much difference in spam detection so far. I still have Message Sniffer, RBLs, greylisting and the other tools SmarterMail provides.

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Right, okay—but what values do you have set in the 'Options' tab to define 'Medium Probability of Being Spam' and 'High Probability of Being Spam'?

From what I can see, it looks like you have some pretty high values.

I have 20 for 'medium' and 30 for 'high'.

Hey Sabatino,

Currently SpamFoo only has one weight for spam. However, if you go into Settings->SpamFoo Dashboard-> System -> Settings You can modify how sensitive SpamFoo is.

Let me know if. you have any questions.

Thanks Zach,

That wasn’t quite my question, though. I understand SpamFoo returns a single result; what I’m asking is how much weight people assign to a SpamFoo positive in the spam checks list.

Of course, the right weight depends on the thresholds set in the Options tab. I have 20 for ‘Medium Probability’ and 30 for ‘High Probability’.

If I set the weight to 50, as Brian did, then for me anything SpamFoo flags would automatically be treated as high-probability spam on its own, with no other test needed to confirm it. I assume Brian has higher thresholds than mine, so for him 50 doesn’t have the same effect.

So the real question is: relative to your Medium/High thresholds, how much do you trust a SpamFoo positive? Do you let it push a message over the threshold by itself, or only in combination with other checks?

Thanks,

Hey Sabatino,

Thank you for following up. I understand what you're asking now. You're referring to the weights configured under Antispam > Filtering that determine whether a message is classified as Low, Medium, or High spam.
Unfortunately, I don't have specific values to share, as we just use the defaults. However, many users rely on SpamFoo to push messages over their configured spam thresholds. Over the past few months, SpamFoo has continued to improve in accuracy.

Kind regards,

Sabatino,

We dropped Cyren at our last renewal, but kept Sniffer for now and gradually phasing this out (reducing its weight while adding to Spamfoo). Overall this has worked out pretty well on a 600 domain server, primarily US based accounts.

If I recall we started Spamfoo at 0 -5, recently we started applying the Not Spam weight.

10 Low
20 Medium
40 High

Rspamd Scoring Factor 1.5
