Will older version of Smartermail automatically process SSL updates?

I personally use the latest version of SmarterMail, and have enjoyed the newish Certificates feature that shows what SSL Certs are loaded, and if there are any issues.  Over the past week I migrated to using "Lets Encrypt" which is free.  No longer will I have to pay for SSL certificates.  With it being free, I quickly setup SSL for every domain / subdomain on my server.  Then I exported them to Smartermail.  After setting up some scripts to automate renewing the SSLs and automatically exporting them to the Certificates directory under Smartermail I have just saved myself over a week of time over the next year.

Being excited about "Lets Encrypt" I am now moving on to my client's servers.  Unfortunately they are running older versions of smartermail.  One client is running build 7068, and the other is running build 16.3.6989.  I was hoping to automate the same process on their servers.  My question is After I initially setup the SSL within smartermail.  Will Smartermail automatically use the renewed SSL Certificates as they are renewed with my script and saved to the SmarterMail/Certificates Directory.  Or will I need to do some addition work? IE restart the service?

I know the obvious is I should just force my clients to update to the newest version of SmarterMail.  But sometimes budgets and priorities don't align.
