I have updated my install from 9518 to 9526 this Saturday morning and am reporting it went smoothly.

Just an observation, Build 9526 saves changes to Content Filters when the Save button on the Conditions or Actions tab is clicked. I'm not sure when this changed but several months ago, these buttons just saved changes to that tab and then the Save button on the Options tab needed to be clicked on to finish the Save.

I haven't noticed any problems so far, upgraded this morning.

It seems to be good here, too

Working on this tonight... fingers crossed we are making a big jump from 8451 to 9526.

Seeing 2 issues so far...
1) Installation lost the custom logo on the HTTPS login page
2) Installation dropped the SSL certificate

Working on those now

Also when testing the Impersonate User operation, there is a major delay before the account pulls up (we are talking minutes... saw some instances of up to 15 minutes before it opened up).  It doesn't open up until you suddenly get forcibly logged off as the administrator, then when you log back in with the adminstrators account, it logs in to the account you asked to impersonate instead.

You could be stuck on account conversions if initial login times are high during first login after an update. We saw this a little too on the first night for a couple hours and it happened for users or when impersonating --

Yeah, we have almost 200 domains and somewhere around 2,000 mailboxes so that is possible.  Thanks J

I tried rebooting the server and that didn't help it any.

I have the logo and SSL cert working again, so so far the only thing I'm seeing is the issue with Impersonation.  Our admins use that heavily for debugging with customers.

Thanks again for the insight.

Hmmm... don't think this is an account conversion in progress issue.

I am seeing some consistency...
When you try to impersonate, it appears to do nothing.
But, if you logout (assuming you are logged in as an admin), then log back in as an admin (doesn't need to be the same admin, any admin)... then it brings up the impersonation view for the account you wanted to impersonate..

Challenge here, the only way to close that is to close the tab/window of the browser, as the Log Out doesn't do anything.

This is readily reproduceable.

Going to let it run thru the rest of the weekend, but if still an issue come Monday morning, will be generating a support ticket.

Rod, just wait some time, you've done a massive update 😉
I've had the same problem and it has solved by itself in some time.
I also had some domains with 0GB used, I got inside the domain and recalculated space for every users

Thanks Stefano, I hope you're right.  I have an automated process I run that utilizes the Impersonation as well to true up the SM domains/accounts with our CMS platform every 10 minutes.  That's failing due to the impersonation issue.

Checked my logs and they are full of errors too.

But... I'm trying to be patient :)

Still failing now 5 hours after initial report of problem.   I've opened a support ticket.

Almost wonder if when making BIG leaps in versions it's better to do steps rather than one big upgrade? In the case maybe 9476 which was a fairly major update, then from there go to 9526. If i'm not mistaken 9476 was a .net update which couldn't be rolled back once completed. If you are running an even older version, maybe take similar steps? i know it leaves you vulnerable a bit longer, but better to leave your system slowly adapt then potentially stall out?

I figured out the web interface impersonation issue.  Dumb I didn't notice it earlier.  At some point following the version we used to be on, SM started requiring POPUPS to be enabled in the browser to open the Impersonation window.  Enabled popups and that is resolved.

However, ran across another issue with the programming API and impersonating a domain-admin to perform simple lookup operations against a domain and its mailboxes, that is failing with a 500 error since the update.

I still have a mess in my logs as well, but I think OPERATIONALLY in being an email server we are good and I can address the other issues little by little... I think.

Updated from 9518 to 9526 with no issues as far as I can tell. For the first time in what seems like forever, I didn't uninstall first. I just ran the installer and upgraded. Took about 5 minutes max between stopping svcs, IIS components, install, and restarting svcs. Of course, I always take a server snapshot before making changes!

When logged into webmail as a mailbox user, it is no longer possible to view reports. You are immediately redirected to the login page.

Installed 9526 10 hours ago.. no problems

edit:
After reading the other comments, I tried the report tab both by impersonating a user and by logging in as a user.

Confirmed… experiencing same reports issue mentioned prior… it is only the user/mailbox level reports, admin reports are working fine best i can tell.  Domain Admin reports are ok too.

Hey Guys,

We made some changes to the reports area to make the end points more secure. I was able to replicate this issue. I will go ahead and get a task created.

Zach,

Is there any vulnerability related to account impersonation in SmarterMail? It is important to know the answer.

Just updated to 9526. Not seeing any issues with reports over here. Checked both user and domains reports by impersonation and by logging in directly.

Happy to report that working with Tony S from SM we were able to figure out the issue with automated coding via the API and the impersonate-user function.   It was a change in the way that command works now requiring  the email address to be in the post parameters instead of on the URL line itself as a parameter.  Working on implementing the change now, but in testing it works well.

Anybody making a sizeable leap in versions like we did (8451->9526)...  beware that the HTTP client interface has significantly changed.

There are a couple of settings that could come in useful to debug "this just doesn't look right" situations.

Under the user account Settings, in the WebMail section:
Hide Email Avatars
and
Preview Pane

When Preview Pane is set to None and the Avatars are disabled, you get what appears to be a misformatted email listing, but it really is just "blah".  Activating those cleans it up.

We also have run into an issue with some status indicator (which I never noticed before, but clients were using it) in the upper corner with the user LETTER block (where the logout is located)... that would have a green circle when the user was active and a red circle when not.  Not sure how, but they say they used to utilize this indicator for OTHERS to know when they were online or not (within their domain).   I haven't found a way yet to get this back for them.

Update:  Found out they are using the status indicator to know when they are or are not connected to the server and receiving updates.  Had nothing to do with knowing when others are online or not.   Sigh... users.

Hello SmarterTools,
Is there a timeframe for the release of a new version of SmarterMail that addresses the reports crashing when accessed by "regular" user accounts?  I can also reproduce this issue.

Hello SmarterTools,
We are experiencing the same problem accessing reports as regular users.
Is there an estimated time for a fix?

I don't use the reports feature, however I have customers that do use it. Just for kicks, I logged as a non-admin user, attempted to access reports, and it kicked me back to the login screen. Build 9526. Tried it both in Chrome/Edge and Firefox.
