Migration from Zimbra to SmarterMail (10,000+ accounts). Best practices and automation?

Hi everyone,

I've been using SmarterMail for years and have handled several migrations and imports before. Typically, my customers have a few dozen to a couple hundred accounts.

Now, I might be hosting a new customer’s email server on a dedicated server, as this company has over 10,000 accounts. About half of them are inactive, but they still need to be migrated.

With this volume, it’s impossible to handle things manually (such as using Mailbox Migration for each account). Even account creation will need to be fully automated. I’m not yet sure if this company uses LDAP for user authentication. If they do, it should simplify things:

  • Import users from LDAP
  • Use IMAPSync to synchronize mailbox data

My questions:

1. LDAP Integration / Synchronization
What’s the best way to import or sync users from LDAP/Active Directory?
In the past, I joined the mail server to the domain via VPN to access LDAP, but I’m wondering if there’s an AD/LDAP authentication connector or application that can be installed directly on the customer’s server.

2. IMAPSync capabilities
Does IMAPSync also synchronize calendars and contacts? (I’ve never used it before.)
If not, what tool would you recommend for migrating those items?

If the customer doesn’t use LDAP, I suppose account creation won’t be fully automated. In that case, I plan to export a user list (CSV) from Zimbra, import it into SmarterMail, assign a default password, and then force users to change their passwords on first login.

Has anyone here done a Zimbra → SmarterMail migration before?
Any advice, tools, or best practices would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you very much!

Rafael,
With this many users, I would definitely be looking at automating the transfer.
IMAPSync just does mail, but it works really well with using toggles, so you can do changes on the fly with each run and have the emails match the source server.

For Calendars and Contacts, I personally would be looking at the APIs for both SmarterMail and Zimbra.
SmarterMail API: https://<mailserver>/Documentation/api#/topics/overview

So calendars you could just export and import the ICS file, but Contacts I don't see anything about importing the CSV from Zimbra, but could be done on a user level, which would suck.  Hopefully, SmarterTools people can chip in on a way to do it.
