DO NOT UPGRADE TO BUILD 9406!!!!!

Completely wiped the webadmin and no access to the domains.<

Downgrade did the trick.

EDIT: Tony installed the latest version and server is rebooted. All is good as of now. Will keep an eye on it during the weekend.

Just updated to 9406 on our test server and didn't have any issues with webadmin access post upgrade. Quick pass through the system and everything looks to be OK for now.

Can report we upgraded to 9406 as well and so far no issues.
Daniele (TDBnet) Replied
9406 updated without critical problems!

But... One issue and one suggestion:

- the new "What's new" box after user logon should be enabled by the admin, not forcefully by the update. Where can I disable it? :-(

- If I now can enable or disable the video of an attendee, why not also its audio? Disabled microphone is a more frequent oversight than the video ;-)

Thank you
Daniele

Update to SM 9406 on Debian 12 Linux: I have issue with Outlook/MAPI access after upgrading due to IPv6.

Solved disabling IPv6 on the Debian 12 server. See here:

Found a bug regression.
On build 9224 you fixed: "In Online Meetings on mobile devices, the focus automatically shifts to the user when they are speaking."

Now this behaviour there's again. Users are very annoyed!

Daniele
You cannot add more than 2 rules in a domain then the third rule gets deleted after you hit save.

I would definitely not install the update. I have opened a ticket because calendar entries created in clients such as Outlook, eM Client, or Apple Calendar are not saved on the server and therefore not synchronized. Tested on different clients / regions with Mac and Windows 10/11. Downgrading to 9400 fixed it immediately. we use german / swiss german operating systems and client-applications. I don't know if this has something to do with.

The change logs for 9406 indicates some fixes in MAPI-Protocol for Calendar and there maybe the bug for this sync-issue happend.
Gabriele Maoret - SERSIS Replied
Hi Roger!
I'm having the same problem you reported regarding calendars: some users who use EM Client (EWS accounts) and MS Outlook (MAPI Exchange accounts) have noticed that the appointments they mark in their calendar are NOT being saved on the SmarterMail server (nor are invitations to other users...).

The worst thing is that when you resync the client, the created appointments simply disappear.

Downgrading to 9392 (because it was my previous working version, never tried 9400...) solves the problem, but the appointments must be recreated from scratch...

Can you upgrade to 9400 so we can see if thats the latest stable build? We havent had any reports on the latest build other than weird favorite folder actions....

It would be great to have a reference point to get back to if the new builds are broken so we know what works so we can keep our customers happy

We had reports of a few clients getting errors saving Calendar changes in webmail, so the problem might be a little larger than just MAPI.

Brian, when you say you can't create more than 3 auto-clean rules for a folder, you are limited to 3 (Size of Folder, Time in Folder, Message Date). Are you trying to add user auto-clean rules that are, say, different than ones set by the Administrator? I'm pretty sure those 3 options have not been changed or others removed in any recent Build. In our testing on the latest, as well as the previous Build, you could create 3 rules and save them all.

Right now it seems the UI is much faster in admin mode. Thats a good improvement
Heads up...a customer reports receiving mail dated tomorrow. Thats not good.

And if you send email to an address that forwards to the smartermail server, you end up with two identical emails.

And an email test sent from a smartermail server to an external account that has forward sent to the same smartermail server shows the out of office reply in the inbox folder... but the mail doesnt show twice.

We just went from Windows Build 8664 (Sept. 21, 2023) to Linux Build 9455. The one thing on the list which shows was fixed is the SmarterMail Migration from an older Windows Build to the newer Linux Build. We stayed on 8664 because of all the issues we were reading about and those never seemed to get fixed for a long time. At least, after migrating ALL the emails over (without the help of the SmarterMail Migration), emails look to be working on the current build (with the exception of the sub-folders issues). Great, there are improvements for outbound SMTP, including rotating outbound IP addresses. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to work.

When setting two outbound SMTP IP addresses to rotate every 10 minutes, we ended up with a spool full of hundreds of unsent emails with 'Error: 0'.

After disabling the new feature and setting a single outbound IP, we were able to clear the queue.

Great job on the rotation stuff SmarterTools! We use the "every x messages" IP rotation and so far, it is working well. Derek - Are we able to specify an SMTP EHLO hostname for each IP? As well, could there also be a "random" option, just to pick a random IP from the pool for each message sent?

Thanks for the reply, Derek.

I tested the outbound IP rotation again, allowing more time to explore different settings, and it is now functioning properly. I had to disable 'Enable Failure Tracking'; once I did this, the queued outbound delivery emails with Error: 0 were successfully sent.

The only thing I can think that might be diffrent in my setup is I have IPv6 enabled for outbound emails sending as well as IPv4.

To piggy-back on to Phillip's post, from our review and tests using config-only copies we've received from some very helpful users, the issue appears related to duplicate entries in the GAL.

The quick fix is to stop the mail service, rename gal.json, then restart the service.

The devs have these config-only copies and are reviewing as well.

This is why I haven't updated anything yet and am waiting at 9455... 😁

I, too, tried renaming gal.json and restarting the SmarterMail service, but the user accounts still appeared blank. I ended up downgrading to 9455, but since then, the server has been running at 100% CPU (typically it is very low) and keeps timing out. I also lost all flags and read status on email accounts. I am looking at an effective way to restore mailbox.cfg for all user accounts to hopefully restore email statuses.

Revised workaround instructions:

1. Stop the mail service
2. Rename gal.json (e.g., gal-old.json)
3. Rename the gal.json in the ArchiveData folder
4. Restart the mail service

Regarding downgrading, we don't generally recommend it, period. With this version, you can revert to an older Build, but if you do there are some things you'll need to do, like rebuilding folders, in order for it to work properly. Therefore, the note regarding the risks around downgrading.

That worked for me. Thank you!

Just to note, after doing the steps above, the gal.json does not get recreated, so it appears the domain(s) are running without a gal.json file.

Hopefully the update resolves this?

Hey folks,

A quick question about build 9476. I don't remember seeing this warning when I checked the changelog before I upgraded: https://www.smartertools.com/smartermail/release-notes/current

  • IMPORTANT: Due to significant changes in SmarterMail, you may not be able to downgrade to previous versions. If you do, it may not be possible to restore your installation to previous versions. Regardless, it is recommended that you take a full backup of your before upgrading.
I would like to know if this was added afterwards, because I'm usually careful about upgrading when seeing such warning and waiting some days/week before applying the upgrade.

Thanks

It was. About 48hrs later.
9483 released...

@Sébastien - Right with you on the same 'Important' warning message. Had we known, we would've waited, but luckily build 9476 looks to be stable for us so on our Linux server.

I assume with the following update:

  • Fixed: Upgrade to Build 9476 (Dec 11, 2025) can cause a domain's Accounts page to go blank.
SmarterTools quickly added the warning, after finding the fix for the domain's to go blank.

Has anyone updated to Build 9483?
SmP Replied
Yes, updated it on systems yesterday and no issues at this point (not running MAPI).

I, just in case, will stay on 9455 for a few more days...

All is fine here.
Only one issue: if you remove a waiting attendee from online meeting, it's black video window appears instead of yours. I don't know from which version (9483? Previous?).

HAd to reboot the server since I couldnt restart smartermail service. Outlook MAPI stood trying to connect.

On one of our servers, many of our clients use MAPI (MS Outlook) and Active Sync. If Brain B. has/d issues, we will wait to update.

I personally want to thank you all, this Community, for these updates.

anybody else cant add a domain to the whitelist??
Gabriele Maoret - SERSIS Replied
Hi Brian!

Can you explain better what problem occurs and where it occurs (a screenshot would be helpful) so I can test it on my servers and see if I have the same problem too?

Trying to whitelist a domain to bypass default DoS rule but cant. Only option is to bypass SMTP auth and I dont need that.

One of their servers keep triggering
the default DoS rule and blocks all emails from their warehouse to their SAP.

Gabriele Maoret - SERSIS Replied
Hmm... I see the same behavior...
I guess you should try using IPs to do what you want...
From what I understand, for domains, you can only bypass SMTP authentication.

Furthermore, from what I see, I can't find a SPECIFIC option for bypassing the anti-DoS rule for IPs either, so I don't know if you'll be able to do it with IPs either...

Exactly. And whitelisting a domain will be the right way to do it since whitelisting an IP that could be subject to change and therefore maintenance.

Brian:  for your unwanted IPS trigger, is the traffic coming from unauthenticated SMTP inbound, or authenticated and potentially outbound?
Its the default DoS rule triggered on an IP with reverse DNS and everthing seems legit. Its a clients warehouse IP trying to deliver emails regarding shipments.

Its coming from a variety of IP's and its a pain to whitelist single IP's all the time and maintain the list.
Douglas Foster Replied
Then it looks like your only option is to disable the rule or greatly modify the trigger level    If it is an authenticated connection, I think the throttle rules would apply instead of default DoS.

Other strategy would be to give the SAP application a dedicated (and unpublished) MX gateway.   Two gateways would allow you to apply different rule setings on different gateways.

@Gabriele - How has 9483 been, especially with EAS, MAPI & EWS?
Gabriele Maoret - SERSIS Replied
I am quite satisfied with the 9483, no problems raised by any user after the upgrade
