SmarterMail was always built to be managed via a web browser. We started off as a project by our CEO, who owned a web hosting company at the time. The mail server we used early on required the use of a console app for management, which was clunky and inefficient. So we built a mail server that was able to be fully managed via the web. 

We've continued building on that early web interface to where we are now, and web-based management is essentially the standard for any email, groupware, and collaboration server.
