Is it possible to create user alias that only works for a single domain alias?
Question asked by Joe Cliff - 6/17/2025 at 6:33 AM
Answered
I have a primary domain.com and 3 domain aliases: domain1.com, domain2.com and doman3.com

I created user aliase (user1) after logging as domain administrator for domain.com.

How can I configure such that only user1@domain1.com and user1@domain.com can receive emails, but not user1@domain2.com or user1@domain3.com

There's no way to restrict how a domain alias works. What you can do, however, is set a content filter at the domain level to delete any emails that are received by user1@domain2.com and user1@domain3.com

Hi Derek! Thanks for highlighting this workaround...

is it possible to make a feature request for this functionality (manage domain aliases for users)?

This seems like a small piece of the problem that occurs when SmarterMailis is used for email hosting of multiple clients. -- how do you treat users on different domains as strangers, even though they share one server? It is not my situation, but I have been surprised that it does not get more discussion.

For your question, I would use  Declude (old or new) because I know that it could do a rule based on domain1 <> domain2, rather than needing to list domains individually

Douglas,

In build 9266 we introduced a new feature that helps address your concern. System administrators have access to the Internal Spam Check Behavior setting under Settings > Antispam > Options.

This settings has three options:

  • Bypass Spam Checks is the previously existing behavior where messages from a local user are allowed to bypass most spam checks.
  • Check All Messages causes SmarterMail to check all messages, regardless of the sender and recipient.
  • Check Other Domains skips most spam checks, but only if the sender and recipient are part of the same domain. If the sender and recipient are part of different domains, all spam checks will be run, even when the domains are hosted on the same SmarterMail server.
