Emails Getting Stuck in MailProcessing Folder After Server Reboot – Anyone Else Facing This?

Hi everyone,

We’re running the latest version of SmarterMail Enterprise , and we’ve run into a recurring issue that’s affecting mail flow across multiple domains.

Issue Summary:

  • After a recent server reboot, we noticed that emails are getting stuck in the MailProcessing folder.

  • This same issue occurred a few weeks ago, and at that time, support identified some corrupted .tmpmsg files, which we removed manually.

  • Once the corrupted files were deleted, the system began processing the remaining emails as expected.

  • However, the issue has now returned, and it's again holding up email delivery after a reboot.

We were under the impression that SmarterMail should process these files on its own, especially when disk space and resources are not constrained. But now we’re wondering if others in the community are seeing the same behavior — particularly tied to reboots.

Has anyone else experienced this issue?

  • Are emails getting stuck in MailProcessing after a reboot?

  • Have you found a permanent fix or workaround?

  • Could this point to a configuration issue or a known bug?

We’d really appreciate any insights or suggestions. This is starting to affect reliability, and we’d like to get ahead of it if possible.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi Parinda, I'm sorry to hear you're having issues with corruption and I'd like to see if I can help narrow down the source. First, I recommend downloading Process Monitor from Sysinternals/Microsoft and configuring it with these filters:

IF PROCESS = MAILSERVICE.EXE THEN EXCLUDE
IF PROCESS = W3WP.EXE THEN EXCLUDE
IF PROCESS = EXPLORER.EXE THEN EXCLUDE
IF PATH CONTAINS C:\SMARTERMAIL\Domains (Adjust for your environment) THEN INCLUDE

Once those are in place hit Filter>Drop Filtered Events and let it run for a bit. Anything that shows up in that list at that point would be another application touching the files inside of user directories, and is likely the source of corruption. If you don't see anything else noted here please note that on your ticket as development will want to check that. I hope that helps!
