"Default encoding changed since initial install" after test migration to Linux
Question asked by Nathan - 2/12/2025 at 10:30 AM
Unanswered
I have just run through a test upgrade from Windows to Linux moving to a Debian 12 based VM. Things seem to be mostly working but on every start up the following is logged:

MailService[1212]: [ERROR] systemEncoding: System.Exception: Default encoding changed since initial install. Please search the SmarterMail Knowledge Base for "SmarterMail doesn't run after changing Windows locale" for mo> Feb 12 17:25:01 MailService[1212]:    at MailService.Core.MailServer.MailServerFullStart()

Previous discussions suggest this should be one-time but that does not appear to be the case. Having examined the mailConfig.xml there is no system locale specified so I cannot apply the suggested but unsupported fix.

Is this a problem? Can it be fixed/supressed?

It sounds like you found the article for the older versions. The current version of SmarterMail only generates mailConfig.xml for compatibility with some older third party software, but doesn't actually read it for settings. The relevant KB article for current SmarterMail is linked below.

Hi Andrew,

Thank you for the pointer to the updated article. When migrating from Windows to Linux is there any particular advice in relation to whether it is better to remove or update:

"system_encoding": { "CodePage": 1252 },

I am mindful that the article states support will not be provided where the CodePage has changed so do not want to do something that puts us in an unsupported state.

Thanks,
Nathan.

I'm also seeing this message in our logs after a windows to linux migration attempt.  More information would be useful.
