Include HTML elements in content filters specified as "Anywhere in message"
Idea shared by Patrick Jeski - 12/23/2024 at 9:20 AM
Proposed
I am receiving a barrage of political spam. The spam emails include unsubscribe links to https://email.email.bigredwin.com.  bigredwin.com is not a valid domain, it is for sale on godaddy.

I tried creating a content filter for "bigredwin.com" as "Anywhere in message". Didn't work, so I submitted a ticket. SmarterTools got back to me promptly. Content filters do not scan HTML elements, in this case an href for the unsubscribe link.

Either as a checkbox option to include HTML elements, or just include them as they are in fact "anywhere", the ability to filter these links would give me relief from this spam.

Jorel from SmarterTools said he is submitting a feature request, and suggested I post this to gauge support for the idea, so please upvote this feature request.

Why would a spam filter not include HTML elements??

Pointing a signature or other HTML element to a blacklist domain would be natural to block....

We had the same issue (almost) and started scanning headers for unsubscribe links, then using the spool filter to at least get them into the junk folder.

You might have luck hunting for them this way, filter for the domain and set a high enough spam score that the system refuses delivery or however you wish to handle it.

For text phrase searching, it makes a lot of sense to convert html to plain text.   To serve both purposes well, they will need to provide two different search options.

No list-unsubscribe headers. The only thing I've found common in these emails is bigredwin.com, as I described above.

I block all emails that contain unsuscribe links, I use the following rule.
