migrating to a new server
Question asked by Diego Discacciati - 12/4/2024 at 1:45 PM
Unanswered
After having too many issues on my old 2012R machine... we are moving to a 2019 server... where hopefully the newer version of smartermail will work as supposed.
Question is... looking at the instructions of course... they are back at version 16 and earlier.
I am using Smartermail build 9091... any suggestion/tip/recommendation? Should I keep the old instructions as a reference or discard them completely?

Ideally it would be great to start with zero domains, add them one by one and then import the user/mail folder if even possible (trying to leave behind any setting that was creating problems on the old server... but I do need to retain the users/passwords/preferences/mail stored on the server...)

Go for Windows server 2022 (or if you can 2025...)

2019 is old and lacks some functions...

I have been waiting for almost 8 months to be upgraded to 2022, our server hosting company just now decided to proceed to gave u8s a 2019 machine. It is not a big company... so I understand the budget constrains, we have the same problems...

What features are missing that might affect smartermail? We are doing the upgrade precisely to solve our problems with Smartermail. everything else is fine, quite the contrary, moving to a newer machine I am sure is going to be a nightmare...
(e sei Italiano pure...: ciao Gabriele!)

We are running W2019 as well as W2022 - both without problems, the 2022 edition is running a bit more smooth but no big difference.

But why not changing to the Linux version?
Especially if the Windows server is serving nothing else than Smartermail.

We migrated a bunch of machines from Windows to Linux -
setting up the Linux box, configuring SmarterMail and then detach+attach the domains (works great).

All Linux instances are running very fast + stable, no problems.
And ... the update process is very fast and there were a lot of updates in the last months.

Nope, unfortunately we are not running only smartermail...

"What features are missing that might affect smartermail?"  At least the support for TLS 1.3

another good  alternative is to go for Linux...

P.S.: ciao Diego!
