Windows to Linux migration: Encoding error
Question asked by Alain W. - 11/8/2024 at 3:28 AM
Unanswered
After migrating from Windows to Linux the mail service logs the following error:
MailService[849]: [ERROR] systemEncoding: System.Exception: Default encoding changed since initial install. Please search the SmarterMail Knowledge Base for "SmarterMail doesn't run after changing Windows locale" for more information.
MailService[849]:    at MailService.Core.MailServer.MailServerFullStart()

Searching the knowledge base returned the following article
portal.smartertools.com/kb/a2776/smartermail-doesnt-run-after-changing-windows-locale.aspx
Which doesn't seem to apply in this case.

Any pointers?

We have seen this error logged once in testing previously on a cloud based instance of SmarterMail running in Ubuntu. Is this a cloud server as well by chance? Also, are you running the latest public release on this server?

Hello Kyle, thanks for your reply. It's not a cloud server. Debian 12, inhouse, Smartermail is the only meaningful application installed. Yes, latest release build 9056.

Interesting, thanks for commenting on that. I'm going to keep an eye out for this in my testing going forward and will follow up here if I spot it again. In the meantime I recommend submitting a ticket on this so our support team can help investigate further.

Can you tell me which build you upgraded from or was it just a straight migration from Windows SmarterMail build 9056 to Linux SmarterMail build 9056? I will try to see if I can replicate using a similar upgrade path/environment.

Thanks a lot Ray.
Migration was Windows Build 9042 (longtime running Smartermail server) to Linux Build 9042. Whereas the Linux server was a fresh install of version Build 8993 which was then gradually updated to 9042 before migration.
