iOS Mail Unread Counts
Problem reported by echoDreamz - 10/21/2024 at 5:06 PM

iOS Mail client will show x number of unread emails for a folder, but webmail, Outlook etc. shows none. The only fix is to mark all as read, readd the account or force a resync. This is when using EAS.

We've had this issue for years and years, 100s of reports and never been able to resolve it. I myself have this issue all the time and it only happens with SmarterMail. My O365 EAS accounts dont do it, another account I have with an IceWarp server does not do this either. Our biggest source of complaints is from O365 users who migrate, then within a week or so start asking why folders are showing unread messages, when there are not any.

Does anyone else have this issue?

YEs. Seeing the same on Android and after the update to 9056 we are seeing a lot of unread mail in subfolders in Outlook as well. And after every reload of outlook we have to manually add some of our favorites in outlook, back since they dissappeared....

This has been a thing, for us at least, since for as long as I can remember... Ill have to go back and look at tickets, but maybe since like ~2017 or so.

My tickets related to the problem going back to maybe 2021 or so.

I suspect it has something to do with sequencing, like if you read an email on your phone via eas and then read it on outlook via mapi before SM syncs either.  Might be vice-versa.  I've yet to figure out the pattern.  WOuld love to see the problem solved.

Confirming that this is a long-standing issue that presents with small or large inboxes.  Our clients are all US-English localization - the only "foreign language" character sets would come from spam mail. Our version also presents multiple issues with iOS devices and syncing - users have to constantly remove and re-add accounts in order for the iDevice to match what webmail or their other devices shows.

We are on an older version due to other bugs continuing to show up and there never being a "stable" release in over a year. Upgrading is not an option until a truly stable version comes out.

This issue cost us our largest customer we provided email for. As a small shop it pretty much tanked any "break even" potential our mail service had. Since then, email service costs us more to operate than the income it generates as we only provide email service based on a web-customer's needs.  After that loss, we couldn't risk any further "disruptions" to the service, and had to stop upgrading.

Being beta testers for SM's larger clients while paying for an enterprise product was not on our bingo card when we went down this path.

I can also confirm the problem with the incorrect transfer of read messages. I also have the feeling that it has become even more severe with build 9056.
