Improve Online Help for Gateways
Idea shared by kevind - 3/23/2024 at 3:07 PM
In Progress
This online help page needs a few updates:
Inbound Gateways
Set up an Inbound Gateway to offload processing from your primary mail server

In the "SmarterMail Gateway" section:
  • Enable SmarterMail Gateway Mode -- asks if the inbound gateway server is SmarterMail (of course it is, that's that server you're currently on). Need to change this to ask if the primary/destination mail server is SmarterMail.
  • SmarterMail URL -- the server being used as the inbound gateway. Again, that's the server you're currently on. I'm pretty sure this should be the URL for the primary/destination mail server.
Might be a few more items on this page that could be rewritten to make it clearer as well.

That page was actually consolidated into this: Outbound / Inbound Gateways | SmarterMail Help (smartertools.com) as gateways are configured a bit differently. If you found that page via searching Help, that info is cached, so we'll have to clear that. If you bookmarked the page, it should be handled via a redirect, so we'll check to make sure that's set up properly. Regardless, that page is no longer relevant, so we'll get it cleaned up a bit.

Derek, OK, looks like the original link I posted above has been taken down.

The Feb-1 Build take you to this page:

But this new page has the same mistakes.

Derek, FWIW, this should not be marked as resolved. The link you provided:
still has incorrect info as described above.

The section "SmarterMail Gateway" doesn't make sense, like this sentence:
"The webmail URL for the SmarterMail server being used an inbound gateway."

Just trying to be helpful.

Agreed. I had to try and add a second Smartermail server to use as an outbound gateway and those linked instructions aren't very well laid out.

Yes, it would be nice if the docs clearly described how to set up both inbound and outbound gateways.

But wait, here's a better idea!  Tune up the UI in "Settings -> Gateways/Failover" to make it clear what you're doing.  Then you wouldn't even need to look at the online help.

Okay, guys. I think we got the confusion surrounding SmarterMail Gateway resolved. We will publish a new version of help, with these changes (and a few other fixes) either later today or tomorrow morning. Sorry for the confusion. I re-read things and agree it was a bit muddled.

Was this ever updated? It still seems kinda all over the place. Maybe section off the instructions a little better based on need then include the options within that section? Something like...

If you want your primary Smartermail server to route outbound email through a secondary Smartermail server:
1) On your primary Smartermail server do this.
    -For one or multiple domains
   -For all domains.
2) On your secondary server do this.

If you want to setup a backup Smartermail MX server to receive email when your primary server goes down.
1) On your primary Smartermail server do this.
2) On your backup Smartermail server do this.

If you want inbound mail routed through a secondary Smartermail server then forwarded to your primary Smartermail server.
1) On your primary server do this.
2) On your secondary Smartermail server do this..
