Windows Firewall Allow Rule for SmarterMail

Occasionally, even when disabled, Windows Firewall can still disrupt the flow of emails to and from your SmarterMail server. This guide explains how to create an inbound rule in Windows Firewall to allow traffic on ports 25, 80, 110, 143, 443, 465, 587, 993, and 995, which are commonly used for email and web services.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Open Windows Firewall

  1. Press Windows + R to open the Run dialog.
  2. Type wf.msc and press Enter. This will open the Windows Firewall with Advanced Security window.

2. Create a New Inbound Rule

  1. In the left pane, select Inbound Rules.
  2. In the right pane, click New Rule....

3. Choose Rule Type

  1. In the "New Inbound Rule Wizard," select Port and click Next.

4. Specify Ports

  1. On the "Does this rule apply to TCP or UDP?" screen, select TCP.
  2. Choose Specific local ports and enter the following port numbers separated by commas: 25, 80, 110, 143, 443, 465, 587, 993, 995
  3. Click Next.

5. Define the Action

  1. On the "What action should be taken?" screen, select Allow the connection.
  2. Click Next.

6. Specify When the Rule Applies

  1. Choose the network profiles where the rule should apply:
    • Domain: Applies when the computer is connected to a domain.

7. Name the Rule

  1. Enter a descriptive name for the rule, such as "SmarterMail".
