Oauth2 for Gmail
Idea shared by Tarkan - 1/21/2024 at 3:10 PM

Hello,

Any plans to implement Oauth2 for Gmail? I know it has been stated before that the process to get accredited with Google is expensive or hard, but it is possible for Google Workplace users to create internal apps to allow connection to Google services with no verification required.

Currently we have a few customers who use Google to handle the domain mail in and out, but prefer to run their own email server onsite this means we have mail retrieval from Gmail and SMTP for the outbound emails via Gmail.

This is also important for mailboxes on Outlook.com!

For SmarterMail, Google's OAuth2 security audit is not possible. Part of the audit requirements for server software require a review of the hardware and network the software is running in. Since SmarterMail is licensed software and not provided as hosted service, there is no way for us to meet that requirement. There are other restrictions regarding some of the APIs we would like to use if we implemented OAuth2 for Google, but the audit requirements are the biggest obstruction for SmarterMail.

That said, we haven't seen any issues with configuring an App Password to link to a Gmail account for Message Retrieval, Email Migration, or SMTP accounts.

Stefan,

SmarterMail already uses OAuth for Message Retrieval, Email Migration, and SMTP accounts on Microsoft 365 or Outlook.com. Is there any specific functionality you feel is missing?
