Can a current build attach a Version 15 domain folder?

We are looking to upgrade a single domain SM install (Version 15.0.5976) to new hardware and upgrade to the latest build in the process.

Question is will a new install of the current build be able to attach the v15 domain data folder which still uses xml, and convert to json on the fly?

Or should we first install v15, import the data and then upgrade SM to the current release.

We prefer to keep the old server as is in case something goes wrong, it will act as our backup.

We brought in a domain folder with about ~70 accounts from an SM install, no issues. The conversion was quick and no issues.

From some v15 build to the latest current v17 release.
